Estimated transmissibility and impact of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 in England.
Nicholas G Davies,Sam Abbott,Rosanna C. Barnard,Christopher I Jarvis,Adam J. Kucharski,James D Munday,Carl A. B. Pearson,Timothy W Russell,Damien C. Tully,Alex D. Washburne,Tom Wenseleers,Amy Gimma,William Waites,Kerry L. M. Wong,Kevin van Zandvoort,Justin D. Silverman,Karla Diaz-Ordaz,Ruth H. Keogh,Rosalind M Eggo,Sebastian Funk,Mark Jit,Katherine E. Atkins,Katherine E. Atkins,W. John Edmunds +23 more
TL;DR: Using a variety of statistical and dynamic modeling approaches, the authors estimate that this variant has a 43 to 90% (range of 95% credible intervals, 38 to 130%) higher reproduction number than preexisting variants, and a fitted two-strain dynamic transmission model shows that VOC 202012/01 will lead to large resurgences of COVID-19 cases.

Estimated transmissibility and severity of novel SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern 202012/01 in England
Nicholas G Davies,Sam Abbott,Rosanna C. Barnard,Christopher I Jarvis,Adam J. Kucharski,James D Munday,Carl A. B. Pearson,Timothy W Russell,Damien C. Tully,Alex D. Washburne,Tom Wenseleers,Amy Gimma,William Waites,Kerry L. M. Wong,Kevin van Zandvoort,Justin D. Silverman,Karla Diaz-Ordaz,Ruth H. Keogh,Rosalind M Eggo,Sebastian Funk,Mark Jit,Katherine E. Atkins,W. John Edmunds +22 more
TL;DR: A novel SARS-CoV-2 variant, VOC 202012/01, emerged in southeast England in November 2020 and appears to be rapidly spreading towards fixation as mentioned in this paper.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
ParaCrawl: Web-Scale Acquisition of Parallel Corpora
Marta Bañón,Pinzhen Chen,Barry Haddow,Kenneth Heafield,Hieu Hoang,Miquel Esplà-Gomis,Mikel L. Forcada,Amir Kamran,Faheem Kirefu,Philipp Koehn,Sergio Ortiz Rojas,Leopoldo Pla Sempere,Gema Ramírez-Sánchez,Elsa Sarrías,Marek Strelec,Brian Thompson,William Waites,Dion Wiggins,Jaume Zaragoza +18 more
TL;DR: Methods to create the largest publicly available parallel corpora by crawling the web, using open source software are reported on and the quality and their usefulness to create machine translation systems are evaluated.

Testing, tracing and isolation in compartmental models
Simone Sturniolo,William Waites,Tim Colbourn,David Manheim,Jasmina Panovska-Griffiths,Jasmina Panovska-Griffiths +5 more
TL;DR: This paper presents a new method for accurately including the effects of Testing, contact-Tracing and Isolation (TTI) strategies in standard compartmental models and shows that the resultant SEIR-TTI model accurately approximates the behaviour of a mechanistic agent-based model at far less computational cost.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modelling the potential impact of mask use in schools and society on COVID-19 control in the UK.
Jasmina Panovska-Griffiths,Cliff C. Kerr,William Waites,Robyn M. Stuart,Dina Mistry,Derek Foster,Daniel J. Klein,Russell M Viner,Chris Bonell +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the importance of masks in secondary schools by evaluating their impact over September 1-October 23, 2020 and show that, assuming TTI levels from August 2020 and no fundamental changes in the virus's transmissibility, adoption of masks would have reduced the predicted size of a second wave, but preventing it would have required 68% or 46% of those with symptoms to seek testing (assuming masks' effective coverage 15% or 30% respectively).
