Abstract: This paper presents the modeling and control design for a wind energy conversion scheme using induction generators. The scheme consists of a three-phase induction generator driven by a horizontal axis wind turbine and interfaced to the utility through a double overhead transmission line. A static VAr compensator was connected at the induction generator terminals to regulate its voltage. The mechanical power input was controlled using the blade pitch-angle. Both state and output feedback controllers are designed using MATLAB software to regulate the generator output. From the simulation results, the response of closed loop system exhibited a good damping and fast recovery under different type of large disturbances.

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis between rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF) and vector-surge (VS) relays for distributed generation islanding detection. The analysis is based on the concepts of detection-time versus active power-imbalance curves and critical active power imbalance. Such curves are obtained through dynamic simulations. The performance of these devices considering different scenarios is determined and compared. Factors such as voltage-dependent loads, generator inertia constant, and multidistributed generator systems are analyzed. False operation of these relays due to faults in adjacent feeders is also addressed. Results show that ROCOF relays are more reliable to detect islanding than vector surge relays when the active power imbalance in the islanded system is small. However, ROCOF relays are more susceptible to false operation than VS relays.

Abstract: A new method is proposed in this paper to determine the harmonic contributions of a customer at the point of common coupling. The method can quantify customer and utility responsibilities for limit violations caused by either harmonic source changes or harmonic impedance changes. It can be implemented in current power quality monitors and digital revenue meters. The method makes it possible to develop fair and consistent billing schemes for harmonic distortion control.

Abstract: Anti-islanding protection of distributed generators (DG) is a significant technical barrier to the emerging DG industry. This paper presents an innovative power line signaling based anti-islanding scheme developed in response to the challenge. The scheme broadcasts a signal from a substation to the DG sites using the distribution feeders as the signal paths. A DG is considered as islanded from the upstream system if the signal cannot be detected at the DG site. The proposed scheme has been evaluated using analytical, simulation and field tests. The results are very promising. This paper presents the main ideas of the scheme and its design considerations. Methods to create and detect the signals are shown and their performances are analyzed.

We explore three major systems, namely the smart infrastructure system, the smart management system, and the smart protection system. We also propose possible future directions in each system. colorred{Specifically, for the smart infrastructure system, we explore the smart energy subsystem, the smart information subsystem, and the smart communication subsystem.} For the smart management system, we explore various management objectives, such as improving energy efficiency, profiling demand, maximizing utility, reducing cost, and controlling emission. For the smart protection system, we explore various failure protection mechanisms which improve the reliability of the Smart Grid, and explore the security and privacy issues in the Smart Grid.

Abstract: Energy is an essential ingredient of socio-economic development and economic growth. Renewable energy sources like wind energy is indigenous and can help in reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. Wind is the indirect form of solar energy and is always being replenished by the sun. Wind is caused by differential heating of the earth's surface by the sun. It has been estimated that roughly 10 million MW of energy are continuously available in the earth's wind. Wind energy provides a variable and environmental friendly option and national energy security at a time when decreasing global reserves of fossil fuels threatens the long-term sustainability of global economy. This paper reviews the wind resources assessment models, site selection models and aerodynamic models including wake effect. The different existing performance and reliability evaluation models, various problems related to wind turbine components (blade, gearbox, generator and transformer) and grid for wind energy system have been discussed. This paper also reviews different techniques and loads for design, control systems and economics of wind energy conversion system.
