Similarity breeds connection. This principle—the homophily principle—structures network ties of every type, including marriage, friendship, work, advice, support, information transfer, exchange, comembership, and other types of relationship. The result is that people's personal networks are homogeneous with regard to many sociodemographic, behavioral, and intrapersonal characteristics. Homophily limits people's social worlds in a way that has powerful implications for the information they receive, the attitudes they form, and the interactions they experience. Homophily in race and ethnicity creates the strongest divides in our personal environments, with age, religion, education, occupation, and gender following in roughly that order. Geographic propinquity, families, organizations, and isomorphic positions in social systems all create contexts in which homophilous relations form. Birds of a Feather: Homophily in Social Networks

A Treatise on the Family. G. S. Becker. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press. 1981. Gary Becker is one of the most famous and influential economists of the second half of the 20th century, a fervent contributor to and expounder of the University of Chicago free-market philosophy, and winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize in economics. Although any book with the word "treatise" in its title is clearly intended to have an impact, one coming from someone as brilliant and controversial as Becker certainly had such a lofty goal. It has received many article-length reviews in several disciplines (Ben-Porath, 1982; Bergmann, 1995; Foster, 1993; Hannan, 1982), which is one measure of its scholarly importance, and yet its impact is, I think, less than it may have initially appeared, especially for scholars with substantive interests in the family. This book is, its title notwithstanding, more about economics and the economic approach to behavior than about the family. In the first sentence of the preface, Becker writes "In this book, I develop an economic or rational choice approach to the family." Lest anyone accuse him of focusing on traditional (i.e., material) economics topics, such as family income, poverty, and labor supply, he immediately emphasizes that those topics are not his focus. "My intent is more ambitious: to analyze marriage, births, divorce, division of labor in households, prestige, and other non-material behavior with the tools and framework developed for material behavior." Indeed, the book includes chapters on many of these issues. One chapter examines the principles of the efficient division of labor in households, three analyze marriage and divorce, three analyze various child-related issues (fertility and intergenerational mobility), and others focus on broader family issues, such as intrafamily resource allocation. His analysis is not, he believes, constrained by time or place. His intention is "to present a comprehensive analysis that is applicable, at least in part, to families in the past as well as the present, in primitive as well as modern societies, and in Eastern as well as Western cultures." His tone is profoundly conservative and utterly skeptical of any constructive role for government programs. There is a clear sense of how much better things were in the old days of a genderbased division of labor and low market-work rates for married women. Indeed, Becker is ready and able to show in Chapter 2 that such a state of affairs was efficient and induced not by market or societal discrimination (although he allows that it might exist) but by small underlying household productivity differences that arise primarily from what he refers to as "complementarities" between caring for young children while carrying another to term. Most family scholars would probably find that an unconvincingly simple explanation for a profound and complex phenomenon. What, then, is the salient contribution of Treatise on the Family? It is not literally the idea that economics could be applied to the nonmarket sector and to family life because Becker had already established that with considerable success and influence. At its core, microeconomics is simple, characterized by a belief in the importance of prices and markets, the role of self-interested or rational behavior, and, somewhat less centrally, the stability of preferences. It was Becker's singular and invaluable contribution to appreciate that the behaviors potentially amenable to the economic approach were not limited to phenomenon with explicit monetary prices and formal markets. Indeed, during the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, he did undeniably important and pioneering work extending the domain of economics to such topics as labor market discrimination, fertility, crime, human capital, household production, and the allocation of time. Nor is Becker's contribution the detailed analyses themselves. Many of them are, frankly, odd, idiosyncratic, and off-putting. …

In this article we examine trends in age homogamy in first marriages in the Netherlands since 1942.... We analyze population data collected by Statistics Netherlands. Controlling for the age distribution of first-marrying men and women, chances are greatest to have married a partner of the same age. These relative chances decrease with rising age at marriage, and increase over historical time. The association between spouses' ages in age-divergent marriages is greater when the husband is older than his wife. This asymmetry in the association decreased until 1970, but increased up until 1994.

Gezien de geleding van de stratificatieproblematiek in de sociologie, gaan de standaardvragen uit de epidemiologie over sociaal-economische verschillen in gezondheid en sterfte voorbij aan eenvoudiger vragen, terwijl ze onvoldoende doorstoten naar complexere. Een voorbeeld van zo'n eenvoudiger vraag is die naar scheefheid in de verdeling van levensduur zelf (/evensduurongelijkheid), een voorbeeld van een complexer vraag is die naar de samenhang van
iemand's gezondheid met iemand's eigen onderwijs, dat van diens vader en dat van diens partner. De bestaande vragen over de samenhang tussen mobiliteit en gezondheid dienen te worden verbreed met vragen over het verband tussen trouwpatronen en gezondheid. Voor de meting van beroep in onderzoek naar sociaal-economische verschillen in gezondheid, heeft de sociologie twee
standaardinstrumenten te bieden.
Bij analyse van bestaande gegevens blijkt dat in industrielanden de levensduurongelijkheid is afgenomen en dat deze met landenkenmerken samenhangt, en dat in Nederland in 1983 het aantal ernstige aandoeningen van een persoon het sterkst samenhangt met iemand's eigen onderwijs, zwakker met het onderwijs van diens huwelijkspartner, en nauwelijks met dat van diens vader.

Gezonde en ongezonde vraagstellingen

Met de invoering aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw in Frankrijk van de Code Penal kwamen voor het eerst geregeld cijfers ter beschikking over wetsovertredingen. Quetelet (1835) ontdekte alras meerdere standvastigheden in deze cijfers. Rekening houdend met het aantal inwoners van Frankrijk, was het aantal aangeklaagden voor misdrijven tegen personen of eigendommen in 1826, 1827, 1828 en 1829 nagenoeg gelijk. Voor deze jaren kwam ook de verhouding tussen het aantal veroordeelden en het aantal aangeklaagden overeen, evenals het quotient van de aantallen aangeklaagden wegens misdrijven tegen personen en tegen eigendommen. Belgische bevindingen wezen ook op onveranderlijkheid. Quetelet beweerde dat de ‘gemiddelde mens’ een vaste ‘hang’ naar misdaad vertoont. Erg blijvend bleek de ‘penchant au crime’ niet te zijn. Zo toonde Von Mayr (1867) met gegevens voor Beieren tussen 1835 en 1861 aan dat als de graanprijs een stuiver stijgt, het aantal diefstallen per 100.000 inwoners met een toeneemt. Franke (1991, p. 21) liet voor Nederland tussen 1850 en 1974 zien dat het relatieve aantal veroordelingen wegens moord of doodslag, met inbegrip van pogingen daartoe, behoorlijk schommelde en daarna, tot 1989, het eindpunt van zijn tijdreeks, sterk steeg. Nieuwbeerta en Deerenberg (2005, p. 59) toonden met de doodsoorzakenstatistiek aan dat het relatieve aantal slachtoffers van moord en doodslag zich in Nederland van 1911 tot in de jaren zestig onder de 0,5 per 100.000 bewoog, om in 1990 boven de 1,0 uit te komen en daar tot 2001, hun laatste waarnemingsjaar, te blijven. Net daarna gingen de relatieve aantallen slachtoffers van moord en doodslag dalen (Nieuwbeerta en Leistra, 2007, p. 41 met cijfers voor 1992-2006). Het peil van 1970 is echter nog niet bereikt, al hoewel het zich nu iets onder de 1,0 bevindt. In het navolgende behandel ik verklaringsvragen over Nederlandse trends in wetsovertreding. Ik doe dat niet alleen omdat sociologie over samenlevingen gaat, over overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen maatschappijen en ontwikkelingen binnen landen, en deze socioloog zich, net als een schoenmaker, bij de leest houdt. Ik doe dat ook omdat onderzoek naar wetmatigheden in wetsovertredingen met een rechtstreeks beleidsbelang betrekking dient te hebben op Nederland, dat wil zeggen op de criminaliteit en de instituties van die staat. En ik doe dat vooral omdat de laatste jaren vragen naar verklaringen van trends in wetsovertredingen voor Nederland op inhoudelijk en theoretisch minder bevredigende wijze aan de orde zijn gesteld. Bij het zoeken naar verklaringen in de Nederlandse criminologie en victimologie verdwenen vragen over preventie door overheidinstellingen en door potentiele slachtoffers soms uit het oog. Al doende hoop ik de weg te wijzen van in deze vakken gangbare vragen naar vragen in de criminaliteitsociologie (vergelijk Ultee, 2005).
