TL;DR: This work studies the problem of distributed maximum computation in an open multi-agent system, where agents can leave and arrive during the execution of the algorithm, and provides algorithms able to eventually compute the maximum of the values held by agents.
Abstract: We study the problem of distributed maximum computation in an open multi-agent system, where agents can leave and arrive during the execution of the algorithm. The main challenge comes from the possibility that the agent holding the largest value leaves the system, which changes the value to be computed. The algorithms must as a result be endowed with mechanisms allowing to forget outdated information. The focus is on systems in which interactions are pairwise gossips between randomly selected agents. We consider situations where leaving agents can send a last message, and situations where they cannot. For both cases, we provide algorithms able to eventually compute the maximum of the values held by agents.

TL;DR: The concept of absolute input-to-state stability (ISS) that generalizes the well-known absolute stability property is introduced and used to design a state-feedback controller that renders the closed-loop system absolutely ISS and is robust to uncertainties in the nonlinearities and disturbances, such as measurement noise.
Abstract: This paper presents an output-feedback controller design for Lur'e-type systems with set-valued nonlinearities in the feedback loop based on a generalization of a Popov-like criterion. Hereto, we introduce the concept of absolute input-to-state stability (ISS) that generalizes the well-known absolute stability property. The latter concept is used to design a state-feedback controller that renders the closed-loop system absolutely ISS and, therewith, robust to uncertainties in the nonlinearities and disturbances, such as measurement noise. Furthermore, an output-feedback controller design is constructed by exploiting the ISS property, where a model- based observer is used to estimate the system state. The control strategy is applied to a mechanical motion system with non-collocation of actuation and dry friction for which well-known strategies such as direct friction compensation fail. The effectiveness of the proposed output-feedback control strategy is shown in simulations.

TL;DR: A method based on l/sub 1/ optimal control that minimizes the amplitude of the oscillations in the to-be-controlled variables and illustrates the elegance of the l/ sub 1/-theory in this setting.
Abstract: In many practical situations, the outputs of a plant are not measured exactly, but are corrupted by quantization errors. Often the effect of the quantization error is neglected in the control design phase, which can lead to undesirable effects like limit cycles and even chaotic behavior once the controller has been implemented. In this paper we present a method based on l/sub 1/ optimal control that minimizes the amplitude of the oscillations in the to-be-controlled variables. Analytical and numerical examples illustrate the elegance of the l/sub 1/-theory in this setting.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of electrical energy storage technologies for stationary applications is presented, with particular attention paid to pumped hydroelectric storage, compressed air energy storage, battery, flow battery, fuel cell, solar fuel, superconducting magnetic energy storage and thermal energy storage.
Abstract: Electrical energy storage technologies for stationary applications are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to pumped hydroelectric storage, compressed air energy storage, battery, flow battery, fuel cell, solar fuel, superconducting magnetic energy storage, flywheel, capacitor/supercapacitor, and thermal energy storage. Comparison is made among these technologies in terms of technical characteristics, applications and deployment status.

TL;DR: This paper focuses on the stability analysis for switched linear systems under arbitrary switching, and highlights necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability.
Abstract: During the past several years, there have been increasing research activities in the field of stability analysis and switching stabilization for switched systems. This paper aims to briefly survey recent results in this field. First, the stability analysis for switched systems is reviewed. We focus on the stability analysis for switched linear systems under arbitrary switching, and we highlight necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability. After a brief review of the stability analysis under restricted switching and the multiple Lyapunov function theory, the switching stabilization problem is studied, and a variety of switching stabilization methods found in the literature are outlined. Then the switching stabilizability problem is investigated, that is under what condition it is possible to stabilize a switched system by properly designing switching control laws. Note that the switching stabilizability problem has been one of the most elusive problems in the switched systems literature. A necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic stabilizability of switched linear systems is described here.

TL;DR: This paper proposes gradient descent algorithms for a class of utility functions which encode optimal coverage and sensing policies which are adaptive, distributed, asynchronous, and verifiably correct.
Abstract: This paper presents control and coordination algorithms for groups of vehicles. The focus is on autonomous vehicle networks performing distributed sensing tasks where each vehicle plays the role of a mobile tunable sensor. The paper proposes gradient descent algorithms for a class of utility functions which encode optimal coverage and sensing policies. The resulting closed-loop behavior is adaptive, distributed, asynchronous, and verifiably correct.
