Abstract: Combining ability analysis can be used to preliminarily identify the advantages and disadvantages of combinations and parents in earlier generations, enabling breeders to reduce the range of material, save breeding time, and improve breeding efficiency An approach for combining ability analysis through the hybrid crop breeding information management system is presented The general combining ability prediction effect of parents and the specific combining ability prediction effect of combinations are calculated to analyze hybrid combinations using the hybrid crop breeding information management system The results provide the basis for parent selection and combination selection The plant breeding trial management function of the system can provide convenient diallel crossing trial design, field planting plan, and combining ability analysis In the system, the genealogy of breeding materials is traced with the combining ability test crosses The selection of high-generation breeding materials can be performed in accordance with the combining ability test results of early generation materials The system has been successfully applied to a large Chinese seed company The combining ability test function automates data analysis and eliminates days in the decision-making process The efficiency of the combining ability test analysis and test report generation has improved to more than double by using the system

Abstract: Digital images used in the field of ophthalmology are among the most important methods for automatic detection of certain eye diseases. These processes include image enhancement as a primary step to assist optometrists in identifying diseases. Therefore, many algorithms and methods have been developed for the enhancement of retinal fundus images, which may experience challenges that typically accompany enhancement processes, such as artificial borders and dim lighting that mask image details. To eliminate these problems, a new algorithm is proposed in this paper based on separating colour images into three channels (red, green, and blue). The green channel is passed through a Wiener filter and reinforced using the CLAHE technique before merging with the original red and blue channels. Reducing the green channel noise with this approach is proven effective over the other colour channels. Results from the Contrast Improvement Index (CII) and linear index of fuzziness (r) test indicate the success of the proposed algorithm compared with alternate algorithms in the application of improving blood vessel imagery and other details within ten test fundus images selected from the DRIVER database.

Abstract: Heavy metal pollution in farmlands is a serious threat to sustainable agricultural development and has become a major agro-ecological problem that has attracted public concern in China. This study proposes a soil–crop collaborative risk assessment model that aims to assess the potential safety risks of heavy metal pollution in farmland soils by considering the concentrations of heavy metals in soils and the accumulation effects of heavy metals in crops. Based on these effects, a decision support system for risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in farmland soil is established, in which technologies such as web-based geographic information system, quick response code, radio frequency identification, and web service are introduced as the bases. The proposed system is composed of a mobile data acquisition terminal (MDAT) and a web-based information system (WIS). The MDAT, which is a portable computerized device running on the Android platform, is used for data acquisition or query, and the WIS is used for risk assessment, data management, and information visualization. The system is employed in some county-level cities in China for risk assessment and supervision of heavy metal pollution in farmlands. The practical application results show that the system provides highly efficient decision support for risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in farmland soils.

Abstract: The world’s food and agricultural programs have gradually declined into an unsustainable situation due to challenges such as increase in world population, varied agro-climatic regions, increase temperature, extreme sole-culture growing techniques, and water shortage. A considerable emphasis has been put on few staple food crops coupled with repeated dieting, food scarcity, and essential mineral deficits, frequently inducing dietary disorders. Because relying on staple crops may lead to serious food shortages in the future, we must adjust our dietary habits to include a diverse range of non-staple foods and maximize their use in order to achieve food security and reduce the nutritional gap. To assure healthy meals around the world, an authentic and reasonable strategy is presented to draw additional awareness towards variations in agricultural production techniques and dietary preferences. The EAT-Lancet declaration highlighted the importance of increasing agri-based foods to achieve sustainable health. Expanding overlooked crops with abundant genetic stocks and possibly beneficial characteristics is an approach that might meet food and nutritional security challenges. Although undervalued, pumpkin is a valuable vegetable herbaceous plant that contributes to global food and nutritional security. This crop has already been identified as a revolutionary age crop, balanced food, and more adapted to low soil and atmospheric circumstances than other major crops. This review paper focuses on the potential uses of pumpkin as an underutilized crop; diversification and development of hybrids, particularly hybridization breeding through diallel mating design; and how implementation of this “modern” technology would contribute to the breeding of the neglected pumpkin vegetable and stimulate productivity and nourish the world’s largest malnourished, deprived, and starved populations.

Abstract: Crop segmentation is a fundamental step of extracting the guidance line for an automated agricultural machine with a visual navigation system. However, the segmentation quality of green crop is seriously affected by the outdoor lighting conditions. To improve the accuracy of crop segmentation under complex lighting conditions, a color-index-based crop segmentation method with luminance partition correction and adaptive thresholding is proposed in this article. The method extracts the luminance component from the given RGB image and employs two adaptive thresholds to divide the luminance image into the dark, normal and bright areas. Then, a partition Gamma function is adaptively selected to improve the brightness levels of the dark and bright regions in which the Gamma correction parameter is adaptively determined based on the local distribution characteristics of illumination, and the corrected image is converted to the RGB counterpart through color saturation restoration. Finally, the ExG (excess green index) color index with Otsu thresholding is used to perform pre-segmentation in order to calculate the segmentation threshold for the final segmentation. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively increase the brightness levels of the dark region and decrease the brightness levels in the bright region. In addition, compared with the traditional Otsu method employed in before and after luminance correction, the proposed method can achieve better segmentation results.
