Characterization of very-large-scale motions in high-Re pipe flows

TL;DR: In this article, very large-scale structures in pipe flows are characterized using an extended Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)-based estimation, where synchronized non-time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and multi-point hotwire measurements are integrated for the estimation of turbulent structures in a pipe flow at friction Reynolds numbers of 9500 and 20000.

A comparative study of the velocity and vorticity structure in pipes and boundary layers at friction Reynolds numbers up to 10(4)

TL;DR: In this article, Kwon et al. measured the full velocity and vorticity vectors in both pipe and boundary layer flows under matched spatial resolution and Reynolds number conditions, and found significant differences in the two transverse Reynolds normal stresses throughout the log layer and wake layer at Reynolds numbers.
