Journal ArticleDOI
Ge-on-Si laser operating at room temperature.
TL;DR: What is believed to be the first experimental observation of lasing from the direct gap transition of Ge-on-Si at room temperature using an edge-emitting waveguide device is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acoustic topological insulator and robust one-way sound transport
TL;DR: In this article, the acoustic analogue of a topological insulator is shown: a metamaterial exhibiting one-way sound transport along its edge, a graphene-like array of stainless-steel rods.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tensile-strained, n-type Ge as a gain medium for monolithic laser integration on Si
Jifeng Liu,Xiaochen Sun,Dong Pan,Xiaoxin Wang,Lionel C. Kimerling,Thomas L. Koch,Jurgen Michel +6 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that tensile strained n-type Ge is a good candidate for Si integrated lasers, despite of the free carrier absorption loss.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Quantum-Well Structures on the Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in the Si/Si1-xGex System
TL;DR: Thermoelectric and other transport measurements were made, indicating that an increase in Z over bulk values is possible through quantum confinement effects in the Si/Si 1- x Ge x quantum-well structures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficient field emission from ZnO nanoneedle arrays
Yanwu Zhu,Hongzhou Zhang,Xiaochen Sun,S. Q. Feng,Jianbin Xu,Qing-Tai Zhao,Bin Xiang,Rongming Wang,Dapeng Yu +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a well-aligned array of ZnO nanoneedles was fabricated using a simple vapor phase growth, and the diameters of the nanomeedle tips are as small as several nanometers, which is highly in favor of the field emission.
