Three-dimensional thermodynamic behaviors for a FML structure subjected to 3-D moving dual-ellipse distribution laser heat source

Fiber metal laminated (FML) structures are used widely, however, studies on the three-dimensional thermoelastoplastic behaviors of FML structure subjected to a moving Gaussian-distributed laser heat source have not yet been developed. In present work, the semi-analytical solution of three-dimensional transient heat transfer equation for FML structure under the action of a moving Gaussian-distributed laser heat source is obtained through the separate variable method (SVM) and the Newton Cotes method (NCM). A yield criterion related to spherical tensor of stress is proposed to describe the mixed hardening of the orthotropic FML structure. Based on classical nonlinear laminated plate theory, the incremental nonlinear governing equations are obtained, and the equations are solved by the combination of finite difference method, Newmark method and iterative method. Numerical results show that the temperature field, moving velocity of laser, number of FML layers, thickness ratio and boundary condition have great influences on thermoelastoplastic behaviors of the FML structure. • Laser moving velocity affects the temperature field, and influences both the equivalent elastoplastic coefficients and strain increments together subsequently. • More alternate layer could resist great deformation although both of two with the same fiber/metal ratio along the height. • Increase of equivalent elastoplastic coefficients play the dominant role than decrease of strains for fixed FML structure. 

3D thermoelastoplastic study of FML structure under the action of a moving Gaussian-distributed laser heat source

The moving laser pulse has been widely employed in microstructure processing and manufacturing, while its influence on the dynamic response of microplates is still unclear. This paper aims to propose a thermo-mechanical coupling model to reveal the transverse response of a microplate subjected to a three-dimensional (3D) moving laser heat source. Herein, not only the 3D heat conduction of the moving laser but also the size-dependent behavior of the microplate are taken into account, in which the former is described by the dual-phase-lag (DPL) heat transfer model and the latter is captured by using the modified couple stress theory. Firstly, the governing equations of the microplate are derived with the aid of Hamilton's principle, which are analytically solved by employing the Green's function method, and they are also validated by comparing with FE simulation and previous studies. Subsequently, influences of phase-lag parameters, pulse duration, laser moving speed and size-scale parameter on the thermo-dynamic response of microplate are examined. It is demonstrated that the size-scale parameter and pulse duration both can reduce the deflection amplitude of the microplate, while the effect of laser moving speed is coupled with the phase-lag parameters. The quantitative results obtained in this study can be adopted to deeply understand the heating process during the actual laser-assisted micro-manufacturing and to provide some effective guidelines on this process. • Heating process of microplate subjected to a 3D moving laser heat source is investigated. • Dual-phase-lag (DPL) model is employed to describe the 3D heat conduction of the moving laser. • The size-dependent behavior of microplate is captured by using the modified couple stress theory. • Effects of phase-lag parameters, pulse duration, laser moving speed and size-scale parameter are discussed.

In this paper, an equivalent temperature model of three-dimensional steady heat conduction analysis for a fiber metal laminated plate coated with a thermal barrier (CFML) is presented. The separate variable method (SVM) and equivalent temperature (ET) method are applied comprehensively to solve the temperature field at the interface between the thermal barrier and top aluminum 2024-T3 layer for the fiber metal laminated (FML) structure firstly, and values of other layers’ temperature and thermal contact resistance are obtained based on balance principle of heat flux between respective adjacent top and bottom layers subsequently. The aim of this research is to understand the influences of kinds of fiber species, numbers of FML layers, thickness ratio between total CFML structure and thermal barrier as well as temperature distributed function on the values of thermal contact resistance between respective adjacent layers and temperature distribution from top to bottom surfaces for the CFML structure. Especially, the ratio of thermal contact resistance between maximum and minimum values are about 5 times no matter considering one or two kinds of fiber species. Besides the present results (mainly geometrical and physical parameters’ effect) could guide engineers designing the CFML structures to adapt to high-temperature environment especially aerospace temperature environment.
