TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for operating supplementary cells in licensed exempt (LE) spectrum is presented, where an aggregating cell operating in a frequency division duplex (FDD) licensed spectrum is aggregated with a LE supplementary cell operating under a time sharing mode for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) operations.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating supplementary cells in licensed exempt (LE) spectrum. An aggregating cell operating in a frequency division duplex (FDD) licensed spectrum is aggregated with a LE supplementary cell operating in a time sharing mode for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) operations. The LE supplementary cell may be an FDD supplementary cell dynamically configurable between an UL only mode, a DL only mode, and a shared mode, to match requested UL and DL traffic ratios. The LE supplementary cell may be a time division duplex (TDD) supplementary cell. The TDD supplementary cell may be dynamically configurable between multiple TDD configurations. A coexistence capability for coordinating operations between the LE supplementary cell with other systems operating in the same channel is provided. Coexistence gaps are provided to measure primary/secondary user usage and permit other systems operating in the LE supplementary cell channel to access the channel.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for estimating and reporting the quality of a wireless communication channel between a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a Node-B is presented.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for estimating and reporting the quality of a wireless communication channel between a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a Node-B. A modulated signal is received from the Node-B over the communication channel and a channel estimation is performed on the modulated signal to provide a channel estimate. In one embodiment, the modulated signal is demodulated based on the channel estimate to provide a demodulated signal and a signal-to-interference (SIR) estimate based on the demodulated signal is obtained. The quality of the communication channel is estimated based on at least the SIR estimate. In an alternate embodiment, a SIR estimate based on the channel estimate is obtained. The quality of the communication channel is estimated based on the SIR estimate and additional information including at least one of delay spread, transmit power and WTRU velocity information.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for performing pulse shaping using different windowing functions for different sub-bands of a transmission is disclosed, and a method for use in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may include the WTRU receiving data symbols.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing pulse shaping using different windowing functions for different sub-bands of a transmission is disclosed. A method for use in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may include the WTRU receiving data symbols. The WTRU may assign the data symbols to a plurality of subcarriers in different sub-bands and map the data symbols on each of the plurality of subcarriers in the different sub-bands to a plurality of corresponding subcarriers of an inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) block. The WTRU may take an IFFT of the block for each sub-band and pad an output of the IFFT block with a prefix and a postfix for each sub-band. The WTRU may apply a windowing function to an output of the padding for each sub-band and form a composite signal for transmission by adding an output of the windowing of each sub-band. The WTRU may transmit the signal.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a receiver which suppresses inter-cluster multipath interference by processing an impulse channel response consisting of two multipath clusters, each cluster having groups of signals with multiple delays.
Abstract: A receiver which suppresses inter-cluster multipath interference by processing an impulse channel response consisting of two multipath clusters, each cluster having groups of signals with multiple delays. In one embodiment, the receiver includes a single antenna and parallel-connected delay units used to align the groups of signals before being input into respective sliding window equalizers. The outputs of the equalizers are combined at chip level via a combiner which provides a single output. In another embodiment, a Cluster Multipath Interference Suppression (CMIS) circuit is incorporated into the receiver. The CMIS circuit includes a hard decision unit and a plurality of signal regeneration units to generate replicas of the multipath clusters. The replicas are subtracted from the respective outputs of the delay units and the results are input to the respective sliding window equalizers. In another embodiment, multiple antennas are used to receive and process the clusters.

TL;DR: In this paper, a base station establishes an extent to which one or more base stations in the wireless telecommunications system support the power boost operating mode conveys an indication of this to a terminal device.
Abstract: A wireless telecommunication system comprises base stations for communicating with terminal devices. One or more base stations support a power boost operating mode in which a base station's available transmission power is concentrated in a subset of its available transmission resources to provide enhanced transmission powers as compared to transmission powers on these transmission resources when the base station is not operating in the power boost mode. A base station establishes an extent to which one or more base stations in the wireless telecommunications system support the power boost operating mode conveys an indication of this to a terminal device. The terminal device receives the indication and uses the corresponding information to control its acquisition of a base station of the wireless telecommunication system, for example by taking account of which base stations support power boosting and/or when power boosting is supported during a cell attach procedure.

TL;DR: From numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed joint precoding and compression strategy outperforms conventional approaches based on the separate design of precode and compression or independent compression across the BSs.
Abstract: This work studies the joint design of precoding and backhaul compression strategies for the downlink of cloud radio access networks. In these systems, a central encoder is connected to multiple multi-antenna base stations (BSs) via finite-capacity backhaul links. At the central encoder, precoding is followed by compression in order to produce the rate-limited bit streams delivered to each BS over the corresponding backhaul link. In current state-of-the-art approaches, the signals intended for different BSs are compressed independently. In contrast, this work proposes to leverage joint compression, also referred to as multivariate compression, of the signals of different BSs in order to better control the effect of the additive quantization noises at the mobile stations (MSs). The problem of maximizing the weighted sum-rate with respect to both the precoding matrix and the joint correlation matrix of the quantization noises is formulated subject to power and backhaul capacity constraints. An iterative algorithm is proposed that achieves a stationary point of the problem. Moreover, in order to enable the practical implementation of multivariate compression across BSs, a novel architecture is proposed based on successive steps of minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) estimation and per-BS compression. Robust design with respect to imperfect channel state information is also discussed. From numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed joint precoding and compression strategy outperforms conventional approaches based on the separate design of precoding and compression or independent compression across the BSs.
