TL;DR: It is demonstrated that PPP-NPs are a promising carrier for future tumor gene delivery and respond to near-infrared (NIR) light illumination at the tumor site and a lowered tumor extracellular pH (pHe).
Abstract: The cationic nature of cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) and their absence of cell selectivity restrains their applications in vivo. In this work, polymer nanoparticles (NPs) modified with photo- and pH-responsive polypeptides (PPPs) were successfully developed and respond to near-infrared (NIR) light illumination at the tumor site and a lowered tumor extracellular pH (pHe). In PPPs, the internalization function of CPPs (positively charged) is quenched by a pH-sensitive inhibitory peptide (negatively charged), which is linked via a photocleavable group. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) was loaded into NPs by a double-emulsion technique. In vivo experiments included siRNA loading, cellular uptake, cell apoptosis, siRNA transfection, tumor targeting delivery, and the in vivo antitumor efficacy. Results showed that the prepared PPP-NPs could selectively accumulate at the tumor sites and internalized into the tumor cells by the NIR light illumination and the lowered pHe at the tumor site. These studies demonstrat...

TL;DR: The experiments show that activation of CXCR4 signaling in AML cells increases autophagic activity and decreases cytarabine-induced apoptosis, and suggest new roles of SDF-1α-CX CR4-autophagy signaling on autophagy induction in AMl cells, which further promoted their survival under stress.

TL;DR: A trade-off model was proposed to demonstrate how did the interactions of soil pH and Mnox affect the rice Cd uptake and it was proposed that the increase in pH and decrease in Mnox following higher dosages of limestone treatment might produce contradictory effects on riceCd uptake.

TL;DR: In this article, carbon-modified Ni(111) surfaces were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and low energy electron microscopy.
Abstract: Nickel carbide and graphene overlayers were grown on Ni(111), which were in situ monitored by near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and low energy electron microscopy. CO adsorption and desorption on the formed carbon-modified Ni(111) surfaces were further investigated by NAP-XPS. We found that the carbidic carbon weakens CO adsorption on Ni, resulting in quick CO desorption around room temperature. A full graphene layer on Ni(111) blocks CO adsorption in 10–6 Torr CO, while CO intercalates the graphene overlayers in 0.1 Torr CO at room temperature. On the graphene/CO/Ni(111) surface, the major part of intercalated CO molecules desorbs extensively around 90 °C from the graphene/Ni interface and the remaining part gets trapped under the graphene even at 200 °C. These results suggest that the surface reactivity of a metal catalyst can be strongly modulated by surface carbon structures.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the effect of varying the thickness of the metal-nanocluster layer and the organic layer on the electrical bistability of trilayer structures.
Abstract: Organic bistable devices with the trilayer structure, organic/metal-nanocluster/organic, interposed between two electrodes have been systematically studied by varying the thickness of the organic layers and the metal-nanocluster layer. Devices fabricated in this fashion exhibit either electrical bistability or current step, depending on the thickness of the metal-nanocluster layer. Electrical bistable devices have been studied by fixing the metal-nanocluster layer thickness at 20 nm and changing the organic-layer thickness from 20 to 60 nm. Device injection current at the on state shows an exponential decrease with an increasing organic-layer thickness, suggesting that the electron transmission probability of the devices decreases with an increasing thickness of the organic layer. This is in agreement with theoretical calculations based on the single-band Hubbard model. The evolution of the electrical current step is observed for devices fabricated by fixing the organic-layer thickness at 50 nm and changing the metal-nanocluster layer thicknesses (2, 4, and 8 nm). The discontinuous metal-nanocluster layer is believed to lead to the observed current step. When the metal-nanocluster layer is thick enough resonant tunneling occurs between nanoclusters causing positive and negative charges to be stored on the opposite sides of the metal-nanocluster layer inducing electrical bistability. Discussions of the observed phenomena are presented.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
