TL;DR: A system that incorporates both spectral characteristics and estimation software to estimate spectral reflectance of art paintings from low-dimensional multichannel images is designed and developed on the basis of the minimum-mean-square error criterion.
Abstract: Accurately estimating the spectral reflectance of art paintings from low-dimensional multichannel images requires that both image-acquisition hardware with appropriate spectral characteristics and appropriate estimation software be applied to the captured multichannel image. In this study, a system that incorporates both factors is designed and developed on the basis of the minimum-mean-square error criterion. The accuracy of spectral estimation by use of this system is evaluated, and the system's high performance is demonstrated.

TL;DR: A new method to correct the barrel distortion of an electronic endoscope image with a correction model assuming circularly symmetric distortion with the advantage of not needing a careful placement of the standard pattern for calibration.
Abstract: A new method to correct the barrel distortion of an electronic endoscope image is presented. A correction model assuming circularly symmetric distortion is introduced with the following model parameters: the center of distortion and the coefficients of polynomials representing the distortion correction in the radial direction. If the imaging system is distortion-free, straight lines in the object space should be imaged as straight lines. Based on this criterion, a distorted image of a standard pattern consisting of a grid of several straight lines is recorded, and the model parameters are then estimated as a basis for straightening distorted lines. This method has the advantage of not needing a careful placement of the standard pattern for calibration. Correction results are presented for the grid pattern chart to verify a sufficient degree of correction. Examples of distortion correction of real intestinal images and physicians' comments are also presented. >

TL;DR: In this article, an object is illuminated sequentially with light of wavelengths in respective narrow bands through a light guide in an electronic endoscope provided with an imaging device, and picture images are photoelectrically converted by the imaging device and are temporarily stored respectively in memories.
Abstract: An object is illuminated sequentially with light of wavelengths in respective narrow bands through a light guide in an electronic endoscope provided with an imaging device. The picture images are photoelectrically converted by the imaging device and are temporarily stored respectively in memories. The spectral distribution characteristics of the object are calculated by using spectral distribution calculating data and are displayed on a display.

TL;DR: A new method to predict the images on a CRT and a hardcopy of skin color under various illuminants is proposed and it is shown that the spectral reflectance can be estimated by three basis functions.
Abstract: We propose a new method to predict the images on a CRT and a hardcopy of skin color under various illuminants. Spectral reflectance of human skin is analyzed by principal component analysis and it is shown that the spectral reflectance can be estimated by three basis functions. The estimation allows colorimetric color reproduction without colorimetric measurements for each illuminant. The proposed method is verified by several skin color patches taken by a calibrated HDTV camera. The method is also applied to practical facial pattern images.

TL;DR: Experimental results show that the modified methods, especially the method using the LAB color space, resulted in better color reproduction performance than the conventional methods and achieves a good spatial image quality.
Abstract: Taking colorimetric color reproduction into account, the conventional error diffusion method is modified for color digital half-toning. Assuming that the input to a bilevel color printer is given in CIE-XYZ tristimulus values or CIE-LAB values instead of the more conventional RGB or YMC values, two modified versions based on vector operation in (1) the XYZ color space and (2) the LAB color space were tested. Experimental results show that the modified methods, especially the method using the LAB color space, resulted in better color reproduction performance than the conventional methods. Spatial artifacts that appear in the modified methods are presented and analyzed. It is also shown that the modified method (2) with a thresholding technique achieves a good spatial image quality.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors categorize and evaluate face detection algorithms and discuss relevant issues such as data collection, evaluation metrics and benchmarking, and conclude with several promising directions for future research.
Abstract: Images containing faces are essential to intelligent vision-based human-computer interaction, and research efforts in face processing include face recognition, face tracking, pose estimation and expression recognition. However, many reported methods assume that the faces in an image or an image sequence have been identified and localized. To build fully automated systems that analyze the information contained in face images, robust and efficient face detection algorithms are required. Given a single image, the goal of face detection is to identify all image regions which contain a face, regardless of its 3D position, orientation and lighting conditions. Such a problem is challenging because faces are non-rigid and have a high degree of variability in size, shape, color and texture. Numerous techniques have been developed to detect faces in a single image, and the purpose of this paper is to categorize and evaluate these algorithms. We also discuss relevant issues such as data collection, evaluation metrics and benchmarking. After analyzing these algorithms and identifying their limitations, we conclude with several promising directions for future research.

TL;DR: In this paper, a variety of technologies by which existing functionality can be improved, and new functionality can also be provided, including visual search capabilities, and determining appropriate actions responsive to different image inputs.
Abstract: Cell phones and other portable devices are equipped with a variety of technologies by which existing functionality can be improved, and new functionality can be provided. Some relate to visual search capabilities, and determining appropriate actions responsive to different image inputs. Others relate to processing of image data. Still others concern metadata generation, processing, and representation. Yet others relate to coping with fixed focus limitations of cell phone cameras, e.g., in reading digital watermark data. Still others concern user interface improvements. A great number of other features and arrangements are also detailed.
