TL;DR: A new technique is developed that integrates multiple polarization channels for various spatial phase profiles into a single hologram that completely avoids unwanted crosstalk, and significantly increase protection for optical data security.
Abstract: Since its invention, holography has emerged as a powerful tool to fully reconstruct the wavefronts of light including all the fundamental properties (amplitude, phase, polarization, wave vector, and frequency). For exploring the full capability for information storage/display and enhancing the encryption security of metasurface holograms, smart multiplexing techniques together with suitable metasurface designs are highly demanded. Here, we integrate multiple polarization manipulation channels for various spatial phase profiles into a single birefringent vectorial hologram by completely avoiding unwanted cross-talk. Multiple independent target phase profiles with quantified phase relations that can process significantly different information in different polarization states are realized within a single metasurface. For our metasurface holograms, we demonstrate high fidelity, large efficiency, broadband operation, and a total of twelve polarization channels. Such multichannel polarization multiplexing can be used for dynamic vectorial holographic display and can provide triple protection for optical security. The concept is appealing for applications of arbitrary spin to angular momentum conversion and various phase modulation/beam shaping elements.

TL;DR: The results of a pilot study show that the proposed teaching scheme significantly improves learning motivation, student creativity, and the teaching of creative design.
Abstract: Student creativity is currently attracting considerable attention. An increasing number of high schools in China are trying to improve the learning motivation and creativity of students, as well as the teaching efficiency of creative design, by introducing augmented reality (AR) technology into creative design courses. However, many teachers have only limited knowledge of AR, and software developers are not familiar with general creative design education, which makes it difficult to incorporate AR in such courses. In many high schools in China, the lack of relevant teaching facilities and creative design equipment means that the environment in which the technology curriculum is applied still has a long way to go to meet the real requirement of curriculum. To address these problems, we present a general technical creative design teaching scheme that includes AR. Our approach is based on the ARCS model of motivational design, social psychology, and a computational model of creativity. Two teaching aids are introduced to support this teaching scheme: "AR Creative-Classroom," which explains the domain-relevant knowledge of creative design, and "AR Creative-Builder," which helps students to build actual AR scenes. The results of a pilot study show that the proposed teaching scheme significantly improves learning motivation, student creativity, and the teaching of creative design. Design a creative design teaching scheme with the introduction of AR.Develop two AR-based and teaching scheme related teaching aids.Demonstrate the AR-based teaching scheme improves the learning motivation.Demonstrate the scheme helps students to experience the complete creative design process.Demonstrate the AR-based teaching scheme improve the creativity of the outputs.

TL;DR: The C-LUT is described and built to reduce the memory usage and speed up the calculation of the computer-generated hologram (CGH) and it is expected that it could be used for realizing real-time and full-color 3D holographic display in the future.
Abstract: A fast algorithm with low memory usage is proposed to generate the hologram for full-color 3D display based on a compressed look-up table (C-LUT). The C-LUT is described and built to reduce the memory usage and speed up the calculation of the computer-generated hologram (CGH). Numerical simulations and optical experiments are performed to confirm this method, and several other algorithms are compared. The results show that the memory usage of the C-LUT is kept low when number of depth layers of the 3D object is increased, and the time for building the C-LUT is independent of the number of depth layers of the 3D object. The algorithm based on C-LUT is an efficient method for saving memory usage and calculation time, and it is expected that it could be used for realizing real-time and full-color 3D holographic display in the future.

TL;DR: An algorithm is developed for 3-D reconstruction of coronary arteries from two uncalibrated monoplane angiographic images on the basis of the pinhole camera model and existing optimization methods and an effective model is proposed for the calculation of contour points of the vascular surface.
Abstract: Three-dimensional reconstruction of vessels from digital X-ray angiographic images is a powerful technique that compensates for limitations in angiography. It can provide physicians with the ability to accurately inspect the complex arterial network and to quantitatively assess disease induced vascular alterations in three dimensions. In this paper, both the projection principle of single view angiography and mathematical modeling of two view angiographies are studied in detail. The movement of the table, which commonly occurs during clinical practice, complicates the reconstruction process. On the basis of the pinhole camera model and existing optimization methods, an algorithm is developed for 3-D reconstruction of coronary arteries from two uncalibrated monoplane angiographic images. A simple and effective perspective projection model is proposed for the 3-D reconstruction of coronary arteries. A nonlinear optimization method is employed for refinement of the 3-D structure of the vessel skeletons, which takes the influence of table movement into consideration. An accurate model is suggested for the calculation of contour points of the vascular surface, which fully utilizes the information in the two projections. In our experiments with phantom and patient angiograms, the vessel centerlines are reconstructed in 3-D space with a mean positional accuracy of 0.665 mm and with a mean back projection error of 0.259 mm. This shows that the algorithm put forward in this paper is very effective and robust.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, the spectral energy distribution of the reflected light from an object made of a specific real material is obtained and a procedure for accurately reproducing the color associated with the spectrum is discussed.
Abstract: This paper presents a new reflectance model for rendering computer synthesized images. The model accounts for the relative brightness of different materials and light sources in the same scene. It describes the directional distribution of the reflected light and a color shift that occurs as the reflectance changes with incidence angle. The paper presents a method for obtaining the spectral energy distribution of the light reflected from an object made of a specific real material and discusses a procedure for accurately reproducing the color associated with the spectral energy distribution. The model is applied to the simulation of a metal and a plastic.

TL;DR: The set-up and results of the Liver Tumor Segmentation Benchmark (LITS) organized in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2016 and International Conference on Medical Image Computing Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2017 are reported.
Abstract: In this work, we report the set-up and results of the Liver Tumor Segmentation Benchmark (LITS) organized in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2016 and International Conference On Medical Image Computing Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2017. Twenty four valid state-of-the-art liver and liver tumor segmentation algorithms were applied to a set of 131 computed tomography (CT) volumes with different types of tumor contrast levels (hyper-/hypo-intense), abnormalities in tissues (metastasectomie) size and varying amount of lesions. The submitted algorithms have been tested on 70 undisclosed volumes. The dataset is created in collaboration with seven hospitals and research institutions and manually reviewed by independent three radiologists. We found that not a single algorithm performed best for liver and tumors. The best liver segmentation algorithm achieved a Dice score of 0.96(MICCAI) whereas for tumor segmentation the best algorithm evaluated at 0.67(ISBI) and 0.70(MICCAI). The LITS image data and manual annotations continue to be publicly available through an online evaluation system as an ongoing benchmarking resource.
