Objective To investigate the immunosuppressive function of extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L in vitro. Methods In vitro, immunocompetence of lymphocytes, M and Nk cells, taken out from spleen and abdomen fluid of rats after being given extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L, were examined. The levels of IL-2 in the supernant of mixed lymphocyte culture were checked also. Results Immunocompetence of lymphocytes and M cells were suppressed greatly by ethanol extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L. Watery extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L can affect T cells function. Ester extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L can affect immunocompetence M and Nk cells. Supernant IL-2 in mixed lymphocyte culture dropped in watery and ethanol extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L groups. Conclusions Different extracts of Caesalpinia Sappan L have defferent immunosuppressive function. Ethanol extract of Caesalpinia Sappan L has the strongest immunosuppressive function.
