Abstract: All-inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted tremendous interest for their excellent stability when compared with hybrid perovskites. Here we report a large-area growth of monocrystalline all-inorganic perovskite thin films and further patterning them into heterostructure arrays. We show that highly oriented CsPbBr3 microcrystal domains can be readily grown on muscovite mica substrates with a well-defined epitaxial relationship, which can further expand and eventually merge into large-area monocrystalline CsPbBr3 thin films with an excellent optical quality. Taking a step further, we show the large-area CsPbBr3 thin film can be further patterned and selectively transformed into CsPbI3 using a selective anion-exchange process to produce CsPbBr3-CsPbI3 lateral heterostructure arrays with spatially modulated photoluminescence emission and an apparent current rectification behavior. The capability to grow large-area CsPbBr3 monocrystalline thin films and heterostructure arrays defines a robust material platform for both the fundamental investigations and potential applications in optoelectronics.

Abstract: Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum in humans. B19 infection also causes severe disease manifestations, such as chronic anemia in immunocompromised patients, aplastic crisis in patients with a high turnover rate of red blood cells, and hydrops fetalis in pregnant women. Although a secreted phospholipase A2 (PLA2) motif has been identified in the unique region of the B19V minor capsid protein VP1(VP1u), the determinants for its enzyme activity and its influences on host cells are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of the PLA2 motif and other regions of the VP1u to the PLA2 activity, to determine the cellular localization of the VP1u protein, and to examine the effects of VP1u on cellular cytokines. We found that in addition to the critical conserved and non-conserved amino acids within the VP1u PLA2 motif, amino acid residues outside the VP1u PLA2 motif are also important for the PLA2 activity. VP1u and various mutants all revealed a nucleo-cytoplasmic distribution. UT7-Epo cells treated with prokaryotic expressed VP1u or mutant proteins with PLA2 activity released a large amount of free fatty acid (FFA), and the cell morphological change occurred dramatically. However, neither free fatty acid nor cell morphology change occurred for cells treated with the mutants without PLA2 activity. The wild type and the VP1u mutants with the PLA2 activity also activated TNF-α promoter and upregulated the transcription activity of NF-κB in transfected cells. In addition, we found that the amino acids outside the PLA2 domain are critical for the viral PLA2 activity, and that these tested VP1u mutants did not affect the localization of the VP1u protein.

Abstract: Background and Aim Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) causes atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction No study up to the present date has examined the relative contribution of all the oxidized components in ox-LDL to inhibition on vascular function Our aim was to investigate the effects of individual oxidized components at concentrations similar to those in ox-LDL on the impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation in rat aorta Methods and Results Rat thoracic aorta was pre-treated with lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), cholesterol oxidized products (COPs), oxidized linoleic acid (ox-18:2) and oxidized linolenic acid (ox-18:3) at concentrations similar to those in human ox-LDL Ox-LDL as a whole caused 61% inhibition while LPC, COPs and ox-18:2 at concentrations similar to those in ox-LDL caused 12%, 24% and 19% inhibition, respectively, on endothelium-dependent relaxation, suggesting that COPs produced the most adverse effect followed by ox-18:2 and LPC in an additional way Three COPs including 7-ketocholesterol, 7α-hydroxycholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol showed inhibition on endothelium-dependent relaxation with E max being reduced to 79–87% compared with the control E max (95%) At Western blot analysis phosphorylation of eNOS at Ser1177 site and total eNOS were not altered by ox-LDL treatment, indicating that ox-LDL did not affect nitric oxide (NO) synthesis capacity Ox-LDL might react directly with NO and lower NO bioavailability Conclusion The present study demonstrated the relative contribution of individual oxidized components in ox-LDL in the inhibition of endothelium-dependent relaxation in rat aorta This inhibitory effect could be caused by the reduction of NO bioactivity

Abstract: PM2.5, formaldehyde, and 8 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were observed in 6 newly decorated apartment units to evaluate the effects of the decorating process on the indoor air quality in Xi’an, China. The comparison of indoor and outdoor formaldehyde and VOCs concentrations showed that the outdoor PM2.5 concentration exceeded the indoor one during the monitoring process, whereas the indoor formaldehyde and VOCs concentrations exceeded the outdoor ones. The levels of formaldehyde and VOCs in different rooms were investigated, and the concentrations in the bedroom were found to be the highest. Furthermore, the formaldehyde and VOCs concentrations were measured in 200 other rooms decorated within a 2-year period in Xi’an, and the results indicated that wallpapering, wooden flooring, and furniture were the major decorating processes emitting these compounds. In addition, a health risk assessment of the monitored formaldehyde and VOCs in the rooms 1 year after decorating showed that benzene posed the greatest health risk among the assessed VOCs.

Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
