TL;DR: A systematic investigation of the size-dependent orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition in perovskite using a combined temperature-dependent optical, electrical transport and transmission electron microscopy study finds that the phase transition temperature decreases with reducing microplate thickness.
Abstract: Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted considerable recent interest for solution processable solar cells and other optoelectronic applications. The orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition in perovskite can significantly alter its optical, electrical properties and impact the corresponding applications. Here, we report a systematic investigation of the size-dependent orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition using a combined temperature-dependent optical, electrical transport and transmission electron microscopy study. Our studies of individual perovskite microplates with variable thicknesses demonstrate that the phase transition temperature decreases with reducing microplate thickness. The sudden decrease of mobility around phase transition temperature and the presence of hysteresis loops in the temperature-dependent mobility confirm that the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition is a first-order phase transition. Our findings offer significant fundamental insight on the temperature- and size-dependent structural, optical and charge transport properties of perovskite materials, and can greatly impact future exploration of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices from these materials.

TL;DR: A novel approach to synthesize atomically dispersed uniform clusters via a cage-separated precursor preselection and pyrolysis strategy is reported, finding that Ru3/CN exhibits excellent catalytic activity, high chemoselectivity, and significantly high turnover frequency for oxidation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol.
Abstract: Here we report a novel approach to synthesize atomically dispersed uniform clusters via a cage-separated precursor preselection and pyrolysis strategy. To illustrate this strategy, well-defined Ru3(CO)12 was separated as a precursor by suitable molecular-scale cages of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). After thermal treatment under confinement in the cages, uniform Ru3 clusters stabilized by nitrogen species (Ru3/CN) were obtained. Importantly, we found that Ru3/CN exhibits excellent catalytic activity (100% conversion), high chemoselectivity (100% for 2-aminobenzaldehyde), and significantly high turnover frequency (TOF) for oxidation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol. The TOF of Ru3/CN (4320 h–1) is about 23 times higher than that of small-sized (ca. 2.5 nm) Ru particles (TOF = 184 h–1). This striking difference is attributed to a disparity in the interaction between Ru species and adsorbed reactants.

TL;DR: This review examines the benefits of exercise in mitigating pre-eclampsia during pregnancy by mechanisms that include improved blood flow, reduced blood pressure, enhanced placental growth and vascularity, increased activity of antioxidant enzymes, reduced oxidative stress and restored vascular endothelial dysfunction.
Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and premature mortality in both women and men in most industrialized countries, and has for some time also established a prominent role in developing nations. In fact, obesity, diabetes mellitus and hypertension are now commonplace even in children and youths. Regular exercise is rapidly gaining widespread advocacy as a preventative measure in schools, medical circles and in the popular media. There is overwhelming evidence garnered from a number of sources, including epidemiological, prospective cohort and intervention studies, suggesting that CVD is largely a disease associated with physical inactivity. A rapidly advancing body of human and animal data confirms an important beneficial role for exercise in the prevention and treatment of CVD. In Part 1 of this review we discuss the impact of exercise on CVD, and we highlight the effects of exercise on (i) endothelial function by regulation of endothelial genes mediating oxidative metabolism, inflammation, apoptosis, cellular growth and proliferation, increased superoxide dismutase (SOD)-1, down-regulation of p67phox, changes in intracellular calcium level, increased vascular endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), expression and eNOS Ser-1177 phosphorylation; (ii) vascular smooth muscle function by either an increased affinity of the Ca2+ extrusion mechanism or an augmented Ca2+ buffering system by the superficial sarcoplasmic reticulum to increase Ca2+ sequestration, increase in K+ channel activity and/or expression, and increase in L-type Ca2+ current density; (iii) antioxidant systems by elevation of Mn-SOD, Cu/Zn-SOD and catalase, increases in glutathione peroxidase activity and activation of vascular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate [(NAD(P)H] oxidase and p22phox expression; (iv) heat shock protein (HSP) expression by stimulating HSP70 expression in myocardium, skeletal muscle and even in human leucocytes, probably through heat shock transcription factor 1 activity; (v) inflammation by reducing serum inflammatory cytokines such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hCRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-18 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha and by regulating Toll-like receptor 4 pathway. Exercise also alters vascular remodelling, which involves two forms of vessel growth including angiogenesis and arteriogenesis. Angiogenesis refers to the formation of new capillary networks. Arteriogenesis refers to the growth of pre-existent collateral arterioles leading to formation of large conductance arteries that are well capable to compensate for the loss of function of occluded arteries. Another aim of this review is to focus on exercise-related cardiovascular protection against CVD and associated risk factors such as aging, coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, diabetes mellitus and peripheral arterial diseases mediated by vascular remodelling. Lastly, this review examines the benefits of exercise in mitigating pre-eclampsia during pregnancy by mechanisms that include improved blood flow, reduced blood pressure, enhanced placental growth and vascularity, increased activity of antioxidant enzymes, reduced oxidative stress and restored vascular endothelial dysfunction.

TL;DR: A low-cost and stable conjugated donor polymer (PTQ10) was introduced as interfacial layer in the planar n-i-p structured pero-SCs and proved to be an effective hole extraction layer due to the proper energy alignment with perovskite.
Abstract: The precise control of stoichiometric balance and ionic defects on the surface of solution-processed perovskite is critical to the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs). Here, we introduce a low-cost and stable conjugated donor polymer (PTQ10) as interfacial layer in the planar n–i–p structured pero-SCs. The polymer was applied to the perovskite intermediate phase before the thermal annealing. This treatment significantly reduced the loss of surface organic cation during thermal annealing. Importantly, the kinetics of phase conversion of perovskite was influenced, and perovskite crystal showed a more preferential orientation. Moreover, the polymer proved to be an effective hole extraction layer due to the proper energy alignment with perovskite. Finally, a champion power conversion efficiency of the planar pero-SCs was achieved at 21.2% with a high fill factor of 81.6%. The devices also showed great ambient and thermal stability. This work presents a facile way of perovskite surfa...

TL;DR: In this paper, layer-structured Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts were successfully prepared via one-pot hydrothermal method for the first time.
Abstract: Layer-structured Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts were successfully prepared via one-pot hydrothermal method for the first time, in which graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) served as the self-sacrificial reagent to supply carbonate anions simultaneously. Our results showed that the in situ fabricated Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction exhibited superior visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for NO photocatalytic oxidation, which can be ascribed to the morphology and structure modulation during the sacrificial synthesis processes. Heterojunctions formation pathways underlying temperature- and time-dependent structure evolution were discussed in detail. The sample fabricated at 160 °C for 12 h (BOC-CN-160) showed high stability and durability, and the highest NO removal rate which is up to 34.8% under visible light irradiation. Results from photocurrent tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrated that the BOC-CN-160 sample presents much more effective interface charge separation efficiency, which can contribute to its remarkably improved photocatalytic performance. Reactive radicals during the photocatalysis processes were identified by electron spin resonance (ESR) study. Combined with the quantification of reaction intermediates, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of NO over Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalyst was proposed. The novel approach developed in this study may be further extended to synthesize a series of novel and highly efficient g-C3N4-based carbonate heterojunction photocatalysts for visible light-harvesting and energy conversion applications.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
