TL;DR: A metagenome-wide association study on stools from individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and healthy controls is performed, identifying microbial strains and functions associated with the disease.
Abstract: The gut microbiota has been linked to cardiovascular diseases. However, the composition and functional capacity of the gut microbiome in relation to cardiovascular diseases have not been systematically examined. Here, we perform a metagenome-wide association study on stools from 218 individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) and 187 healthy controls. The ACVD gut microbiome deviates from the healthy status by increased abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and Streptococcus spp. and, functionally, in the potential for metabolism or transport of several molecules important for cardiovascular health. Although drug treatment represents a confounding factor, ACVD status, and not current drug use, is the major distinguishing feature in this cohort. We identify common themes by comparison with gut microbiome data associated with other cardiometabolic diseases (obesity and type 2 diabetes), with liver cirrhosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Our data represent a comprehensive resource for further investigations on the role of the gut microbiome in promoting or preventing ACVD as well as other related diseases. The gut microbiota may play a role in cardiovascular diseases. Here, the authors perform a metagenome-wide association study on stools from individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and healthy controls, identifying microbial strains and functions associated with the disease.

TL;DR: Lin et al. as discussed by the authors used metallic tin to prevent oxidation in mixed Pb-Sn narrowbandgap perovskites to reduce the Sn4+ (an oxidation product of Sn2+) to Sn2+ via a comproportionation reaction.
Abstract: Combining wide-bandgap and narrow-bandgap perovskites to construct monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells offers avenues for continued increases in photovoltaic (PV) power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). However, actual efficiencies today are diminished by the subpar performance of narrow-bandgap subcells. Here we report a strategy to reduce Sn vacancies in mixed Pb–Sn narrow-bandgap perovskites that use metallic tin to reduce the Sn4+ (an oxidation product of Sn2+) to Sn2+ via a comproportionation reaction. We increase, thereby, the charge-carrier diffusion length in narrow-bandgap perovskites to 3 μm for the best materials. We obtain a PCE of 21.1% for 1.22-eV narrow-bandgap solar cells. We fabricate monolithic all-perovskite tandem cells with certified PCEs of 24.8% for small-area devices (0.049 cm2) and of 22.1% for large-area devices (1.05 cm2). The tandem cells retain 90% of their performance following 463 h of operation at the maximum power point under full 1-sun illumination. Improvements in the efficiency and stability of low-bandgap perovskite solar cells are key to enabling all-perovskite solar cells. Here, Lin et al. use metallic tin to prevent oxidation in such low-gap perovskite and demonstrate 24.8%-efficient tandems that are stable for over 400 h under operating conditions.

TL;DR: Xiao et al. as mentioned in this paper used strongly reductive surface-anchoring zwitterionic molecules to suppress Sn2+ oxidation and passivate defects at the grain surfaces in mixed lead-tin perovskite films, enabling an efficiency of 21.7% (certified 20.7%).
Abstract: Monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells offer an avenue to increase power conversion efficiency beyond the limits of single-junction cells. It is an important priority to unite efficiency, uniformity and stability, yet this has proven challenging because of high trap density and ready oxidation in narrow-bandgap mixed lead–tin perovskite subcells. Here we report simultaneous enhancements in the efficiency, uniformity and stability of narrow-bandgap subcells using strongly reductive surface-anchoring zwitterionic molecules. The zwitterionic antioxidant inhibits Sn2+ oxidation and passivates defects at the grain surfaces in mixed lead–tin perovskite films, enabling an efficiency of 21.7% (certified 20.7%) for single-junction solar cells. We further obtain a certified efficiency of 24.2% in 1-cm2-area all-perovskite tandem cells and in-lab power conversion efficiencies of 25.6% and 21.4% for 0.049 cm2 and 12 cm2 devices, respectively. The encapsulated tandem devices retain 88% of their initial performance following 500 hours of operation at a device temperature of 54–60 °C under one-sun illumination in ambient conditions. Ensuring both stability and efficiency in mixed lead–tin perovskite solar cells is crucial to the development of all-perovskite tandems. Xiao et al. use an antioxidant zwitterionic molecule to suppress tin oxidation thus enabling large-area tandem cells with 24.2% efficiency and operational stability over 500 hours.

TL;DR: In this article, a dual-phase all-inorganic composite CsPbBr3-CsPb2Br5 was developed and applied as the emitting layer in LEDs, which exhibited a maximum luminance of 3853 cd m-2, with current density (CE) of ≈8.98 cd A-1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.21%, respectively.
Abstract: A dual-phase all-inorganic composite CsPbBr3-CsPb2Br5 is developed and applied as the emitting layer in LEDs, which exhibited a maximum luminance of 3853 cd m–2, with current density (CE) of ≈8.98 cd A–1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of ≈2.21%, respectively. The parasite of secondary phase CsPb2Br5 nanoparticles on the cubic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals could enhance the current efficiency by reducing diffusion length of excitons on one side, and decrease the trap density in the band gap on the other side. In addition, the introduction of CsPb2Br5 nanoparticles could increase the ionic conductivity by reducing the barrier against the electronic and ionic transport, and improve emission lifetime by decreasing nonradiative energy transfer to the trap states via controlling the trap density. The dual-phase all-inorganic CsPbBr3-CsPb2Br5 composite nanocrystals present a new route of perovskite material for advanced light emission applications.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, a room-temperature (RT) synthesis of CsPbX3@X quantum-well band alignment is proposed to guarantee the excitons generation and high-rate radiative recombination at RT.
Abstract: Recently, Kovalenko and co-workers and Li and co-workers developed CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) inorganic perovskite quantum dots (IPQDs), which exhibited ultrahigh photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs), low-threshold lasing, and multicolor electroluminescence. However, the usual synthesis needs high temperature, inert gas protection, and localized injection operation, which are severely against applications. Moreover, the so unexpectedly high QYs are very confusing. Here, for the first time, the IPQDs' room-temperature (RT) synthesis, superior PL, underlying origins and potentials in lighting and displays are reported. The synthesis is designed according to supersaturated recrystallization (SR), which is operated at RT, within few seconds, free from inert gas and injection operation. Although formed at RT, IPQDs' PLs have QYs of 80%, 95%, 70%, and FWHMs of 35, 20, and 18 nm for red, green, and blue emissions. As to the origins, the observed 40 meV exciton binding energy, halogen self-passivation effect, and CsPbX3@X quantum-well band alignment are proposed to guarantee the excitons generation and high-rate radiative recombination at RT. Moreover, such superior optical merits endow them with promising potentials in lighting and displays, which are primarily demonstrated by the white light-emitting diodes with tunable color temperature and wide color gamut.
