Abstract: Over the past decade, the large-scale cultivation of seaweed Gracilaria has expanded rapidly in the Chinese coastal waters. The production of Gracilaria increased from 50,536 tons (t, dry weight) in 2003 to 114,722 t in 2010. The production of the seaweed ranks third only to kelps Saccharina (formerly referred to as Laminaria) and Undaria in China. Nan'ao located in Shantou City, Guangdong Province has been successfully developed as one of the major cultivation bases of Gracilaria lemaneiformis at an industrial scale in South China since 2000, and the farmed area increased by 11,538-fold from 0.13 ha in 2000 to 1500 ha in 2011. From lab-scale study to field industrial practice, it has been documented that Gracilaria cultivation is beneficial in environmental improvements such as mitigating eutrophication, controlling harmful algal blooms, maintaining healthy mariculture systems, and sequestrating CO2. Gracilaria may significantly remediate contaminants in mariculture ecosystems and improve the water environment, and its cultivation provides a new approach to coastal environmental improvement in China and the world.

Abstract: Commercialization of algal lipids and biofuels is still impractical owing to the unavailability of lipogenic strains and lack of economically viable oil extraction strategies. Because lipogenesis is governed by multiple factors, success in generating industrial-suitable algal strains using conventional strategies has been limited. We report the discovery of a novel bZIP1 transcription factor, NobZIP1, whose overexpression results in a remarkable elevation of lipid accumulation and lipid secretion in a model microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica, without impairing other physiological properties. Chromatin immunoprecipitation–quantitative PCR analysis revealed that the key genes up- and down-regulated by NobZIP1 are involved in lipogenesis and cell wall polymer synthesis, respectively, which, in turn, induce lipid overproduction and secretion. Among these regulated genes, UDP-glucose dehydrogenase was shown to alter cell wall composition, thus also boosting lipid secretion. In summary, these results offer a comprehensive strategy for concurrent lipid overproduction and secretion, strongly increasing the commercial potential of microalgae.

Abstract: The sustainability of aquaculture has been debated intensely since 2000, when a review on the net contribution of aquaculture to world fish supplies was published in Nature. This paper reviews the developments in global aquaculture from 1997 to 2017, incorporating all industry sub-sectors and highlighting the integration of aquaculture in the global food system. Inland aquaculture—especially in Asia—has contributed the most to global production volumes and food security. Major gains have also occurred in aquaculture feed efficiency and fish nutrition, lowering the fish-in–fish-out ratio for all fed species, although the dependence on marine ingredients persists and reliance on terrestrial ingredients has increased. The culture of both molluscs and seaweed is increasingly recognized for its ecosystem services; however, the quantification, valuation, and market development of these services remain rare. The potential for molluscs and seaweed to support global nutritional security is underexploited. Management of pathogens, parasites, and pests remains a sustainability challenge industry-wide, and the effects of climate change on aquaculture remain uncertain and difficult to validate. Pressure on the aquaculture industry to embrace comprehensive sustainability measures during this 20-year period have improved the governance, technology, siting, and management in many cases. The volume of global aquaculture production has tripled since 2000 with positive trends in environmental performance, but the sector faces mounting challenges including pathogen management, pollution, climate change, and increasing dependence on land-based resource systems.
