TL;DR: It is shown that the MMFC diameter has significant influence on the refractive index (RI) sensitivity but the length does not, and a refractometer with a lower MM FC diameter has a higher sensitivity.
Abstract: We have investigated the influence of multimode fiber core (MMFC) diameters and lengths on the sensitivity of an SMS fiber based refractometer. We show that the MMFC diameter has significant influence on the refractive index (RI) sensitivity but the length does not. A refractometer with a lower MMFC diameter has a higher sensitivity. Experimental investigations achieved a maximum sensitivity of 1815 nm/ RIU (refractive index unit) for a refractive index range from 1.342 to 1.437 for a refractometer with a core diameter of 80 μm. The experimental results fit well with the numerical simulation results.

TL;DR: An enhanced evanescent field fiber refractometer based on a tapered multimode fiber sandwiched between two single-mode fibers offers ultrahigh sensitivity and is the highest value reported to date (to the authors' knowledge) in the literature.
Abstract: We propose and experimentally demonstrate an enhanced evanescent field fiber refractometer based on a tapered multimode fiber sandwiched between two single-mode fibers Experiments show that this fiber sensor offers ultrahigh sensitivity [better than 1900nm/RIU at a refractive index (RI) of 144] for RI measurements within the range of 133 to 144, in agreement with the theoretical predictions This is the highest value reported to date (to our knowledge) in the literature

TL;DR: An overview of the different types of FOS used for strain/temperature sensing in composite materials and their compatibility with and suitability for embedding inside a composite material is presented.
Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the different types of fiber optic sensors (FOS) that can be used with composite materials and also their compatibility with and suitability for embedding inside a composite material. An overview of the different types of FOS used for strain/temperature sensing in composite materials is presented. Recent trends, and future challenges for FOS technology for condition monitoring in smart composite materials are also discussed. This comprehensive review provides essential information for the smart materials industry in selecting of appropriate types of FOS in accordance with end-user requirements.

TL;DR: A refractive index (RI) sensor based on a novel fiber structure that consists of a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) fiber structure followed by a fiber Bragg grating was demonstrated.
Abstract: A refractive index (RI) sensor based on a novel fiber structure that consists of a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) fiber structure followed by a fiber Bragg grating was demonstrated The multimode fiber in the SMS structure excites cladding modes within output single-mode fiber (SMF) and recouple the reflected cladding Bragg wavelength to the input SMF core By measuring the relative Bragg wavelength shift between core and cladding Bragg wavelengths, the RI can be determined Experimentally we have achieved a maximum sensitivity of 733 nm/RIU (RI unit) at RI range from 1324 to 1439

TL;DR: In this article, a single bent singlemode -multimode-singlemode (SMS) fiber structure was proposed to measure both displacement and temperature simultaneously and independently, and the experimental results show that this sensor has a sensitivity of 5.89 pm/μm for displacement and 11.6 pm/°C for temperature.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the principles of optics electromagnetic theory of propagation interference and diffraction of light, which can be used to find a good book with a cup of coffee in the afternoon, instead of facing with some infectious bugs inside their computer.
Abstract: Thank you for reading principles of optics electromagnetic theory of propagation interference and diffraction of light. As you may know, people have search hundreds times for their favorite novels like this principles of optics electromagnetic theory of propagation interference and diffraction of light, but end up in harmful downloads. Rather than enjoying a good book with a cup of coffee in the afternoon, instead they are facing with some infectious bugs inside their computer.

TL;DR: It is shown that the two-dimensional nature of graphene oxide and its superpermeability to water combine to enable humidity sensors with unprecedented response speed (∼30 ms response and recovery times), which opens the door to various applications, such as touchless user interfaces, which is demonstrated with a 'whistling' recognition analysis.
Abstract: Sensors allow an electronic device to become a gateway between the digital and physical worlds, and sensor materials with unprecedented performance can create new applications and new avenues for user interaction. Graphene oxide can be exploited in humidity and temperature sensors with a number of convenient features such as flexibility, transparency and suitability for large-scale manufacturing. Here we show that the two-dimensional nature of graphene oxide and its superpermeability to water combine to enable humidity sensors with unprecedented response speed (∼30 ms response and recovery times). This opens the door to various applications, such as touchless user interfaces, which we demonstrate with a ‘whistling’ recognition analysis.
