TL;DR: Optical dark solitons described by the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation are discussed, and the criterion of soliton instability is presented.
Abstract: Optical dark solitons described by the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation are discussed, and the criterion of soliton instability is presented. This analytical criterion is confirmed numerically for an exactly solvable model of nonlinear saturation.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the interaction of spatial optical solitons with curved dielectric surfaces in unbiased nematic liquid crystals depends on the curvature of the surface and the walk-off, and it can be employed for efficient routing and control of the soliton trajectories.
Abstract: We study experimentally the interaction of spatial optical solitons with curved dielectric surfaces in unbiased nematic liquid crystals. We demonstrate that this interaction depends on the curvature of the surface and the walk-off, and it can be employed for efficient routing and control of the soliton trajectories. We also observe a large-angle total internal reflection of the soliton beam from an interface between liquid crystal and air.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate how to realize an indefinite media with hyperbolic isoffrequency surfaces in wave vector space by employing two-dimensional metamaterial transmission lines, and visualize the peculiar character of wave propagation by study of the cross-like emission pattern of a current source placed in the lattice center.
Abstract: We demonstrate how to realize an indefinite media with hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces in wavevector space by employing two-dimensional metamaterial transmission lines. We classify different types of such media, and visualize the peculiar character of wave propagation by study of the cross-like emission pattern of a current source placed in the lattice center. Our results are supported by a solution of the Kirchhoff equations, an analytical theory, and experimental data.

TL;DR: For a periodic lattice of nonlinear interfaces, an effective discrete model is derived for the amplitudes of the fundamental and second-harmonic waves at the interfaces and the spatially localized solutions are found--discrete gap solitons.
Abstract: We analyze two-color spatially localized nonlinear modes formed by parametrically coupled fundamental and second-harmonic fields excited at quadratic (or ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)})$ nonlinear interfaces embedded in a linear layered structure---a quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal. For a periodic lattice of nonlinear interfaces, we derive an effective discrete model for the amplitudes of the fundamental and second-harmonic waves at the interfaces (the so-called discrete ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ equations) and find, numerically and analytically, the spatially localized solutions---discrete gap solitons. For a single nonlinear interface in a linear superlattice, we study the properties of two-color localized modes, and describe both similarities to and differences from quadratic solitons in homogeneous media.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
