TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid metasurface based on electromagnetically coupled dielectric and metallic elements is proposed to enhance the local image quality in magnetic resonance imaging.
Abstract: Metasurfaces represent a new paradigm in artificial subwavelength structures due to their potential to overcome many challenges typically associated with bulk metamaterials. The ability to make very thin structures and change their properties dynamically makes metasurfaces an exceptional meta-optics platform for engineering advanced electromagnetic and photonic metadevices. Here, we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a tunable metasurface capable of enhancing significantly the local image quality in magnetic resonance imaging. We present a design of the hybrid metasurface based on electromagnetically coupled dielectric and metallic elements. We demonstrate how to tailor the spectral characteristics of the metasurface eigenmodes by changing dynamically the effective permittivity of the structure. By maximizing a coupling between metasurface eigenmodes and transmitted and received fields in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, we enhance the device sensitivity that results in a substantial improvement of the image quality.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study three approaches for the field update including simple noniterative explicit schemes and compare them to the analytical results for optical pulse propagation in long nonlinear media (nonlinear phase incursion for the pump wave of about π radians).
Abstract: Accurate finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling of optical pulse propagation in nonlinear media usually implies the use of auxiliary differential equation (ADE) techniques. The updating of electric field in full-vectorial 3-D ADE FDTD modeling of the optical Kerr effect and two-photon absorption in optical media is proceeded conventionally through the iterative solution of nonlinear algebraic equations. Here, we study three approaches for the field update including simple noniterative explicit schemes. By comparing them to the analytical results for optical pulse propagation in long nonlinear media (nonlinear phase incursion for the pump wave of about π radians), we demonstrate convincingly that simple noniterative FDTD updating schemes, which are commonly believed to be inaccurate and unstable, produce accurate results and drastically speed up the computation as compared to ADE approaches. Such schemes can significantly reduce the CPU time for nonlinear computations, especially in 3-D models.

TL;DR: The wave scattering by the junction defect is analyzed and nonzero reflection for any set of parameters is demonstrated and it is shown that if the junction is nonlinear, it is possible to achieve the maximum transmission for any frequency by tuning the intensity of the scattering wave.
Abstract: We study the properties of junctions created by the crossing of N identical branches of linear discrete networks. We reveal that for N>2 such a junction creates a topological defect and supports two types of spatially localized modes. We analyze the wave scattering by the junction defect and demonstrate nonzero reflection for any set of parameters. If the junction is nonlinear, it is possible to achieve the maximum transmission for any frequency by tuning the intensity of the scattering wave. In addition, near the maximum transmission the system shows the bistable behavior.

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison between the experimental data on the structure and motion of vortex solitons created as localized structures in a diffracting Gaussian beam and the theory based on the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation is made.
Abstract: We present a brief overview of recent experimental and theoretical results on optical vortex solitons (in particular, those recently obtained at the Australian National University). Special attention is paid to a direct comparison between the experimental data on the structure and motion of vortex solitons created as localized structures in a diffracting Gaussian beam and the theory based on the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We also analyze, for the first time to our knowledge, the effect of strong nonlinearity saturation on the transverse (or snake-type) instability of a dark-soliton stripe and show that saturation leads to a drastic suppression of the instability.

TL;DR: In this paper, localized modes at a surface of a multilayer structure made of graphene layers separated by dielectric layers are studied, with the presence of deeply subwavelength surface modes associated with the electromagnetic Tamm states.
Abstract: We study localized modes at a surface of a multilayer structure made of graphene layers separated by dielectric layers We demonstrate the existence of deeply subwavelength surface modes that can be associated with the electromagnetic Tamm states, with the frequencies in the THz frequency range the negative group velocities We suggest that the dispersion properties of these Tamm surface modes can be tuned by varying the thickness of a dielectric cap layer

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
