TL;DR: A novel class of continuous-discrete spatiotemporal solitons propagating along the interface of two different periodic photonic lattices are demonstrated, including hybrid staggered-unstaggered discrete light bullets with tails belonging to spectral gaps of different types.
Abstract: We analyze spatiotemporal light localization at the interface separating two different periodic photonic lattices. We demonstrate the existence of a novel class of continuous-discrete spatiotemporal solitons propagating along the interface, including hybrid staggered-unstaggered discrete light bullets with tails belonging to spectral gaps of different types.

TL;DR: In this article, the in-plane and out-of-plane bandgap properties of two-dimensional triangular void channel photonic crystals fabricated by femtosecond laser drilling in a solid polymer material were characterized for transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization illumination.
Abstract: The in-plane and out-of-plane band-gap properties of two-dimensional triangular void channel photonic crystals fabricated by femtosecond laser drilling in a solid polymer material were characterized for transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization illumination. For a 24 layer structure stacked in the Γ–M direction, the fundamental stop gap resulted in the suppression of infrared transmission of as much as 96% for TE- and 85% for TM-polarized incident light. The midgap wavelength for the TM polarization was longer by 2.5% than that for the TE polarization. Increasing the angle of incidence for both the in-plane and out-of-plane cases shifted the stop gap to short wavelengths for both TE and TM polarizations. The experimental results allowed for the estimation of the cross section of void channels and the effective refractive index of the polymer after the fabrication.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate that strong diamagnetism over a very wide frequency range can be realized in metamaterials by employing nonresonant elements with deeply subwavelength dimensions.
Abstract: We discuss the strategy for achieving the values of the effective magnetic permeability much smaller than unity by employing an appropriate arrangement of metamaterial elements (``meta-atoms''). We demonstrate that strong diamagnetism over a very wide frequency range can be realized in metamaterials by employing nonresonant elements with deeply subwavelength dimensions. We analyze the effect of the lattice parameters on the diamagnetic response and find that selecting an appropriate lattice type is crucial for optimal performance. Finally, we discuss the optimal characteristics required to obtain the lowest possible values of magnetic permeability and point out an efficient tuning possibility.

TL;DR: In this article, the process of second-harmonic generation by two noncollinear beams in ferroelectric crystals with a disordered distribution of domains was studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and it was shown that this process results in the generation of secondharmonic wave in the direction transverse to the propagation of the fundamental beam.
Abstract: We study, both experimentally and theoretically, the process of second-harmonic generation by two noncollinear beams in ferroelectric crystals with a disordered distribution of ferroelectric domains. We show that this parametric process results in generation of second-harmonic wave in the direction transverse to the propagation of the fundamental beam. We demonstrate how this effect can be used for the femtosecond pulse characterization enabling the estimation of both width and chirp of the pulse.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
