TL;DR: This model can be regarded as a nonlinear generalization of the familiar Fano-Anderson model and it can generate amplitude-dependent bistable resonant transmission or reflection and is identified as the nonlinear Fano resonance.
Abstract: We consider a discrete model that describes a linear chain of particles coupled to a single-site defect with instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. We show that this model can be regarded as a nonlinear generalization of the familiar Fano-Anderson model and it can generate amplitude-dependent bistable resonant transmission or reflection. We identify these effects as the nonlinear Fano resonance and study its properties for continuous waves and pulses.

Abstract: Light in a laser is confined in the form of standing waves. By engineering such waves, scientists have designed an optical system that enhances this confinement, producing a compact laser that emits a high-quality beam. See Letter p.196

TL;DR: In this paper, a new class of optical nanoantennas based on dielectric nanoparticles has been proposed and their main characteristics have been analyzed, including the properties of a Huygens element in the optical wavelength range.
Abstract: A new class of optical nanoantennas based on dielectric nanoparticles has been proposed and their main characteristics have been analyzed. It has been shown that one dielectric nanoparticle can have the properties of a Huygens element in the optical wavelength range. A Yagi-Uda nanoantenna based on dielectric nano-particles has been studied analytically and numerically.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the magnetic resonance of a split-ring resonator with a varactor diode at microwave frequencies and demonstrated different tuning regimes with and without an inductive coil in parallel with the varactor.
Abstract: We study both theoretically and experimentally the dynamic tunability of the magnetic resonance of a single nonlinear split-ring resonator with varactor diode at microwave frequencies. We demonstrate different tuning regimes with and without an inductive coil in parallel with the varactor. We show that the coil changes the sign of the nonlinearity and eliminates the memory effect caused by charge accumulation across the varactor. In addition, at higher powers the nonlinear response of the split-ring resonator becomes multivalued, paving a way for creating bistable tunable metamaterials.

TL;DR: In this article, the stability of two and three-hump solitary waves governed by incoherent beam interaction in a saturable medium was investigated by means of linear stability analysis and numerical simulations, providing a theoretical background for the experimental results reported by Mitchell, Segev and Christodoulides.
Abstract: We demonstrate that, in contrast with what was previously believed, multihump solitary waves can be stable. By means of linear stability analysis and numerical simulations, we investigate the stability of two- and three-hump solitary waves governed by incoherent beam interaction in a saturable medium, providing a theoretical background for the stability of the experimental results reported by Mitchell, Segev, and Christodoulides [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 4657 (1998)].

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.
