TL;DR: In this paper, a framework for determining importance degree of criteria to overcome the shortcomings of this subject in material selection is presented, and the suggested framework covers the situation of interdependent relationship between the criteria which has not been surveyed in the material selection.
Abstract: Material selection is an onerous process of design activities which needs to be carefully carried out in order to increase the probability of success. A lot of multi-criteria decision-making methods have been proposed in material selection, many of which require quantitative weights for the attributes. Since weights play a very significant role in the ranking results of the materials, this paper presents a framework for determining importance degree of criteria to overcome the shortcomings of this subject in material selection. Furthermore, the suggested framework covers the situation of interdependent relationship between the criteria which has not been surveyed in material selection yet. An example was considered to illustrate how this framework is conducted. On the basis of the numerical results, it can be concluded that the proposed method can soundly deal with the material selection problems.

TL;DR: In this paper, an aggregation technique is proposed for optimal decision-making, where ranking orders obtained by various MCDM methods are used as the input of the suggested procedure and the outputs are aggregation rankings, which help designers and engineers to reach a consensus on materials selection for a specific application.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have identified important aspects of employability skills needed by the manufacturing industry employer of their workers especially new workers, and the skills were ranked and results showed that the basic skill, thinking skill, sources skill, resources skill, system and technology skill and personal qualities are the most important skills that employers need compare to informational skill which is less important.
Abstract: Employability skill is one of the skills that employers need. This study is to identify important aspects of employability skills needed by the manufacturing industries employer of their workers especially new workers. Samples for the research consist of 107 employers from manufacturing industry and this study has been done to two types of company, according to categories which is size and ownership status. Analysis of the survey done, manage to determine important aspects of the employability skills needed by employers in the manufacturing industries. The skills were ranked and results shows that the basic skill, thinking skill, sources skill, resources skill, system and technology skill and personal qualities are the most important skills that employers need compare to informational skill which is less important. From the research findings, graduates can identify important aspect of employability skills to focus in enhancing their marketability before entering working environment. As for institutions, the employability skills listed will help to focus inculcating which employability skills to stress in their teaching and learning process.

TL;DR: This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for "experimenters") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment.
Abstract: THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS. By Oscar Kempthorne. New York, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1952. 631 pp. $8.50. This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. TL;DR: The results of this study indicated that in 2013 scholars have published articles more than in other years, and energy, environment and sustainability were ranked as the first areas that have applied MCDM techniques and approaches.
Abstract: Multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) is considered as a complex decision-making (DM) tool involving both quantitative and qualitative factors. In recent years, several MCDM techniques and approaches have been suggested to choosing the optimal probable options. The purpose of this article is to systematically review the applications and methodologies of the MCDM techniques and approaches. This study reviewed a total of 393 articles published from 2000 to 2014 in more than 120 peer reviewed journals (extracted from Web of Science). According to experts’ opinion, these articles were grouped into 15 fields. Furthermore, these articles were categorised based on authors, publication date, name of journals, methods, tools, and type of research (MCDM utilising research, MCDM developing research, and MCDM proposing research). The results of this study indicated that in 2013 scholars have published articles more than in other years. In addition, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method in the individual tool...

TL;DR: Ashby et al. as mentioned in this paper presented a comprehensive overview of the role of materials and materials processing in product design, with a particular emphasis on creating both desired aesthetics and functionality, and provided a detailed profile of each material, including its physical and mechanical properties, chemical properties, common uses, how it is typically made and processed, and even its average price.
Abstract: Materials are the stuff of design. From the very beginning of human history, materials have been taken from the natural world and shaped, modified, and adapted for everything from primitive tools to modern electronics. This renowned book by noted materials engineering author Mike Ashby and Industrial designer, Kara Johnson, explores the role of materials and materials processing in product design, with a particular emphasis on creating both desired aesthetics and functionality. The new edition will feature even more of the highly useful "materials profiles," that give critical design, processing, performance and applications criteria for each material in question. The reader will find information ranging from the generic and commercial names of each material, its physical and mechanical properties, its chemical properties, its common uses, how it is typically made and processed, and even its average price. And with improved photographs and drawings, the reader will be taken even more closely to the way real design is done by real designers, selecting the optimum materials for a successful product. * The best guide ever published on the on the role of materials, past and present, in product development, by noted materials authority Mike Ashby and professional designer Kara Johnson--now with even better photos and drawings on the Design Process * Significant new section on the use of re-cycled materials in products, and the importance of sustainable design for manufactured goods and services * Enhanced materials profiles, with addition of new materials types like nanomaterials, advanced plastics and bio-based materials

TL;DR: This paper develops a method to solve the multicriteria decision making (MCDM) problem within the context of HFLTS in which the criteria conflict with each other, and proposes a sort of hesitant fuzzy linguistic measures, which are motivated by the traditional VIKOR method.
Abstract: The hesitant fuzzy linguistic term set (HFLTS) has turned out to be a powerful and flexible technique in representing decision makers’ qualitative assessments in the processes of decision making. The aim of this paper is to develop a method to solve the multicriteria decision making (MCDM) problem within the context of HFLTS in which the criteria conflict with each other. To do so, the concepts of ideal solutions for a HFL-MCDM problem have been introduced. In addition, in order to represent the closeness of one solution to the ideal one, we propose a sort of hesitant fuzzy linguistic measures, such as the hesitant fuzzy linguistic group utility measure, the hesitant fuzzy linguistic individual regret measure, and the hesitant fuzzy linguistic compromise measure. Based on these measures, we develop a hesitant fuzzy linguistic VIKOR (HFL-VIKOR) method, which is motivated by the traditional VIKOR method. The general procedures for the HFL-VIKOR method are given. Some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the advantages and practicality of our method. Finally, we make some discussions on the advantages of the HFL-VIKOR method, as well as future work.
