Abstract: Oxidation of isoprene by hydroxyl radical (OH), ozone (O3), or nitrate radical (NO3) leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere This SOA contributes to the radiation balance by scattering and absorbing solar radiation In this study, the effect of oxidation processes on the wavelength-dependent complex refractive index (RI) of SOA generated from isoprene was examined Oxidation conditions did not have a large effect on magnitude and wavelength dependence of the real part of the RI In the case of SOA generated in the presence of sulfur dioxide (SO2), significant light absorption at short visible and ultraviolet wavelengths with the imaginary part of the RI, up to 0011 at 375 nm, was observed during oxidation with OH However, smaller and negligible values were observed during oxidation with O3 and NO3, respectively Moreover, in the absence of SO2, light absorption was not observed regardless of the oxidation process There was an empirical correlation between the imagin

Abstract: The kinetics and mechanism of the reactions Cl + (CH3)3CCHO and Cl + (CH3)2CHCHO were investigated at room temperature using two complementary techniques: flash photolysis/UV absorption and continuous photolysis/Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) smog chamber. Reactions proceed predominantly by abstraction of the aldehydic H atom to form acyl radicals. FTIR measurements indicated that the acyl-forming channel accounts for 81% ± 8% and 85% ± 10% of the reaction of Cl atoms with (CH3)3CCHO and (CH3)2CHCHO. UV measurements indicated that the acyl-forming channel accounts for 88% ± 6% and 85% ± 5% of the reaction of Cl atoms with (CH3)3CCHO and (CH3)2CHCHO. The atmospheric fate (>98%) of the resulting (CH3)3CC(O) and (CH3)2CHC(O) radicals is an addition of O2 to give the corresponding acylperoxy radical. In 700 Torr of N2/O2 mixtures at a temperature of 296 K, the decomposition of (CH3)3CC(O) and (CH3)2CHC(O) radicals via CO elimination occurs at rates of ∼1 × 105 and ∼4 × 103 s-1, respectively. Abstract: The application of electrostatic lenses is demonstrated to give a substantial improvement of the two-dimensional (2D) ion/electron imaging technique. This combination of ion lens optics and 2D detection makes “velocity map imaging” possible, i.e., all particles with the same initial velocity vector are mapped onto the same point on the detector. Whereas the more common application of grid electrodes leads to transmission reduction, severe trajectory deflections and blurring due to the non-point source geometry, these problems are avoided with open lens electrodes. A three-plate assembly with aperture electrodes has been tested and its properties are compared with those of grid electrodes. Abstract: The primary aim of this article is to provide an overview of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) detected in the environment, wildlife, and humans, and recommend clear, specific, and descriptive terminology, names, and acronyms for PFASs. The overarching objective is to unify and harmonize communication on PFASs by offering terminology for use by the global scientific, regulatory, and industrial communities. A particular emphasis is placed on long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids, substances related to the long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids, and substances intended as alternatives to the use of the long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids or their precursors. First, we define PFASs, classify them into various families, and recommend a pragmatic set of common names and acronyms for both the families and their individual members. Terminology related to fluorinated polymers is an important aspect of our classification. Second, we provide a brief description of the 2 main production processes, electrochemical fluorination and telomerization, used for introducing perfluoroalkyl moieties into organic compounds, and we specify the types of byproducts (isomers and homologues) likely to arise in these processes. Third, we show how the principal families of PFASs are interrelated as industrial, environmental, or metabolic precursors or transformation products of one another. We pay particular attention to those PFASs that have the potential to be converted, by abiotic or biotic environmental processes or by human metabolism, into long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acids, which are currently the focus of regulatory action.
