Abstract: The optical properties of aerosols at 405 and 781 nm were measured in an urban site in Nagoya, Japan, in August 2011 and in January 2012 using a photoacoustic spectrometer. Comparison of the absorption coefficient at 781 nm of aerosols that did and did not pass through a thermo-denuder showed that an increase in black carbon (BC) light absorption due to the coating of non-refractory materials (i.e., the lensing effect) was small (on average, 10%) in August and negligible in January. The effective density distributions for the particles that did and did not pass through the thermo-denuder, which were measured simultaneously in August, suggested that the majority of BC particles sampled had a minimal coating. The small lensing effect observed can be explained partly by assuming that a large portion of non-refractory materials was mixed externally with BC. The contribution of direct light absorption by organic matter (OM) that vaporized at temperatures below 300°C to the total light absorption at 405 nm was negligible in August, but those by OM that vaporized below 300 and 400°C averaged 11 and 17%, respectively, in January. The larger contribution of light-absorbing OM in January is likely due to the greater contribution of OM originating from the burning of biomass, including biofuel and agricultural residue, in Japan, northern China, or Siberia, during the winter.

Abstract: Doppler profiles of chlorine and hydrogen atomic fragments produced in the photodissociation of mono‐ and dichloroethylenes at 193 nm have been measured in a pump‐and‐probe experiment using 2+1 resonance‐enhanced multiphoton ionization. In a second experiment, the angular distributions of the Cl fragments produced from chloroethylenes at 235 and 238 nm were measured using a perfect‐focusing mass spectrometer. In a third experiment, we measured the power dependence of the relative yields of H, Cl, HCl, and HCl+ produced from vinyl chloride at 193 nm. For Cl detachment, two primary processes have been confirmed. One produces an isotropic angular distribution of photofragments, while the other produces an anisotropic distribution. For H atom detachment, an isotropic angular distribution and a Boltzmann velocity distribution were found. The ratio of yields of the Cl and H fragments was found to be 4±1 for CH2CCl2 and higher than 10 for t‐CHClCHCl and CCl2CClH. The H, Cl, and HCl yields were found to be first order in laser intensity, while the HCl+ yield was found to be third order. Saturation measurements of the ion yield indicate that the latter results from a 1+1+1 resonance‐enhanced process involving a bound state of the parent molecule. This intermediate state may also be responsible for producing the statistical component of the Cl atom product.

Abstract: The reactions O(1D)+HCl→OH+Cl (1a) and OCl+H (1b), O(1D)+DCl→OD+Cl (2a) and OCl+D (2b), and O(1D)+Cl2→OCl+Cl (3) are studied at an average collision energy of 7.6, 7.7, and 8.8 kcal/mol for (1), (2), and (3), respectively. H, D, and Cl atoms are detected by the resonance‐enhanced multiphoton ionization technique. The average kinetic energies released to the products are estimated from Doppler profile measurements of the product atoms. The relative yields [OCl+H]/[OH+Cl] and [OCl+D]/[OD+Cl] are directly measured, and a strong isotope effect (H/D) on the relative yields is found. The fine‐structure branding ratios [Cl(2P1/2]/[Cl(2P3/2)] of the reaction products are also measured. The results suggest that nonadiabatic couplings take place at the exit channels of the reactions (1a) and (2a), while the reaction (3) is totally adiabatic.

Abstract: The photodissociation of ozone at 226 nm is studied for O3→O2(X3 Σ−g)+O(2p3Pj) by probing O(3Pj) atomic photofragments with a resonance‐enhanced multiphoton ionization method. Angular and kinetic energy distributions are determined by measuring time‐of‐flight spectra as a function of the angle between the polarization vector of the dissociation laser and the detector axis. The Doppler width of O(3Pj) photofragments is also measured. The translational energy distribution is well represented by assuming the formation of vibrationally excited O2 molecules with an average vibrational quantum number of 12. The anisotropy parameter β for the angular distribution is found to be 0.7±0.1. The predissociation dynamics from the photoprepared O3(1B2) state to the repulsive potential surface is discussed.

Abstract: The application of electrostatic lenses is demonstrated to give a substantial improvement of the two-dimensional (2D) ion/electron imaging technique. This combination of ion lens optics and 2D detection makes “velocity map imaging” possible, i.e., all particles with the same initial velocity vector are mapped onto the same point on the detector. Whereas the more common application of grid electrodes leads to transmission reduction, severe trajectory deflections and blurring due to the non-point source geometry, these problems are avoided with open lens electrodes. A three-plate assembly with aperture electrodes has been tested and its properties are compared with those of grid electrodes. Abstract: The primary aim of this article is to provide an overview of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) detected in the environment, wildlife, and humans, and recommend clear, specific, and descriptive terminology, names, and acronyms for PFASs. The overarching objective is to unify and harmonize communication on PFASs by offering terminology for use by the global scientific, regulatory, and industrial communities. A particular emphasis is placed on long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids, substances related to the long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids, and substances intended as alternatives to the use of the long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids or their precursors. First, we define PFASs, classify them into various families, and recommend a pragmatic set of common names and acronyms for both the families and their individual members. Terminology related to fluorinated polymers is an important aspect of our classification. Second, we provide a brief description of the 2 main production processes, electrochemical fluorination and telomerization, used for introducing perfluoroalkyl moieties into organic compounds, and we specify the types of byproducts (isomers and homologues) likely to arise in these processes. Third, we show how the principal families of PFASs are interrelated as industrial, environmental, or metabolic precursors or transformation products of one another. We pay particular attention to those PFASs that have the potential to be converted, by abiotic or biotic environmental processes or by human metabolism, into long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acids, which are currently the focus of regulatory action.
