Background and Objectives: It is important to understand the temporal and spatial distributions of standing wood carbon storage in forests to maintain ecological balance and forest dynamics. Such information can provide technical and data support for promoting ecological construction, formulating different afforestation policies, and implementing forest management strategies. Long-term series of Landsat 5 (Thematic Mapper, TM) and Landsat 8 (Operational Land Imager, OLI) remote sensing images and digital elevation models (DEM), as well as multiphase survey data, provide new opportunities for research on the temporal and spatial distributions of standing wood carbon storage in forests. Methods: The extracted remote sensing factors, terrain factors, and forest stand factors were analyzed with stepwise regression in relation to standing wood carbon storage to identify significant influential factors, build a global ordinary least squares (OLS) model and a linear mixed model (LMM), and construct a local geographically weighted regression (GWR), multiscale geographically weighted regression model (MGWR), temporally weighted regression (TWR), and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR). Model evaluation indicators were used to calculate residual Moran’s I values, and the optimal model was selected to explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of standing wood carbon storage in the Liangshui Nature Reserve. Results: Remote sensing factors, topographic factors (Slope), and stand factors (Age and DBH) were significantly correlated with standing wood carbon storage, and the constructed global models exhibited fitting effects inferior to those of the established local models. LMM is also used as a global model to add random effects on the basis of OLS, and R2 is increased to 0.52 compared with OLS. The local models based on geographically weighted regression, namely, GWR, MGWR, TWR, and GTWR, all have good performance. Compared with OLS, the R2 is increased to 0.572, 0.589, 0.643, and 0.734, and the fitting effect of GTWR is the best. GTWR can overcome spatial autocorrelation and temporal autocorrelation problems, with a higher R2 (0.734) and a more ideal model residual than other models. This study develops a model for carbon storage (CS) considering various influential factors in the Liangshui area and provides a possible solution for the estimation of long-term carbon storage distribution.

Research on the Temporal and Spatial Distributions of Standing Wood Carbon Storage Based on Remote Sensing Images and Local Models

Stand description, site quality determination and appropriate forest management decisions originate from reliable stem height predictions. In this work, the predictive performances of height-diameter models developed for Taurus cedar (Cedrus libani A. Rich.) plantations in the Western Mediterranean Region of Turkey were investigated. Parametric modeling methods such as fixed-effects, calibrated fixed-effects, and calibrated mixed-effects were evaluated. Furthermore, in an effort to come up with more reliable stem-height prediction models, artificial neural networks were employed using two different modeling algorithms: the Levenberg-Marquardt and the resilient back-propagation. Considering the prediction behavior of each respective modeling strategy, while using a new validation data set, the mixed-effects model with calibration using 3 trees for each plot appeared to be a reliable alternative to other standard modeling approaches based on evaluation statistics regarding the predictions of tree heights. Regarding the results for the remaining models, the resilient propagation algorithm provided more accurate predictions of tree stem height and thus it is proposed as a reliable alternative to pre-existing modeling methodologies.

Total tree height predictions via parametric and artificial neural network modeling approaches

Forest biomass is a foundation for evaluating the contribution to the carbon cycle of forests, and improving biomass estimation accuracy is an urgent problem to be addressed. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) enables the accurate restoration of the real 3D structure of forests and provides valuable information about individual trees; therefore, using TLS to accurately estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) has become a vital technical approach. In this study, we developed individual tree AGB estimation models based on TLS-derived parameters, which are not available using traditional methods. The height parameters and crown parameters were extracted from the point cloud data of 1104 trees. Then, a stepwise regression method was used to select variables for developing the models. The results showed that the inclusion of height parameters and crown parameters in the model provided an additional 3.76% improvement in model estimation accuracy compared to a DBH-only model. The optimal linear model included the following variables: diameter at breast height (DBH), minimum contact height (Hcmin), standard deviation of height (Hstd), 1% height percentile (Hp1), crown volume above the minimum contact height (CVhcmin), and crown radius at the minimum contact height (CRhcmin). Comparing the performance of the models on the test set, the ranking is as follows: artificial neural network (ANN) model > random forest (RF) model > linear mixed-effects (LME) model > linear (LN) model. Our results suggest that TLS has substantial potential for enhancing the accuracy of individual-tree AGB estimation and can reduce the workload in the field and greatly improve the efficiency of estimation. In addition, the model developed in this paper is applicable to airborne laser scanning data and provides a novel approach for estimating forest biomass at large scales.

Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Imagery and Deep Learning UNet to Classification Upland Crop in Small Scale Agricultural Land

At the regional scale, many studies have been devoted to the construction of biomass models to improve the accuracy of regional biomass estimation, while only a few studies were carried out to investigate spatial influence. Therefore, the current research examined the spatial autocorrelations as well as variations between forest biomass and forest variables using 419 forest biomass plots sampled in the Guizhou Province in the year 2010. Besides, 4 global models, including the ordinary least squares model (OLS), linear mixed model (LMM), spatial lag model (SLM), spatial error models (SEM), together with geographically weighted regression model (GWR, the local model), were fitted to the associations of forest biomass with basal area, height and age of the stand. As suggested by our findings, distinct spatial autocorrelations as well as variations exist between forest biomass and these variables. OLS is not appropriate for modeling. SLM and SEM efficiently accounted for the spatial autocorrelations within model residual; however, they were unable to manage spatial heterogeneities. However, LMM and GWR, which had combined spatial variations as well as dependence during the modeling process, performed well in data fitting and response variable predicting. Of them, GWR reduced spatial heterogeneity to a greater extent than LMM.

Application of spatial regression models for forest biomass estimation in guizhou province, southwest china

In natural forest ecosystems, there is often abundant down dead wood (DDW) due to wind disasters, which greatly changes the size and structure of forests. Accurately determining the DDW volume (DDWV) is crucial for sustaining forest management, predicting the dynamic changes in forest resources and assessing the risks of natural disasters or disturbances. However, existing models cannot accurately express the significant spatial nonstationarity or complexity in their spatial relationships. To this end, we established a geographically weighted deep neural network (GWDNN) model that constructs a spatially weighted neural network (SWNN) through geographic location data and builds a neural network through stand factors and remote sensing factors to improve the interpretability of the spatial model of DDWV. To verify the effectiveness of this method, using 2019 data from Liangshui National Nature Reserve, we compared model fit, predictive ability and residual spatial autocorrelation among the GWDNN model and four other spatial models: an ordinary least squares (OLS) model, a linear mixed model (LMM), a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model and a deep neural network (DNN) model. The experimental results show that the GWDNN model is far superior to the other four models according to various indicators; the coefficient of determination R2, root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), Moran’s I and Z-statistic values of the GWDNN model were 0.95, 1.05, 0.77, -0.01 and -0.06, respectively. In addition, compared with the other models, the GWDNN model can more accurately depict local spatial variations and details of the DDWV in Liangshui National Nature Reserve.
