Removal of contaminants in wastewater, such as heavy metals, has become a severe problem in the world. Numerous technologies have been developed to deal with this problem. As an emerging technology, nanotechnology has been gaining increasing interest and many nanomaterials have been developed to remove heavy metals from polluted water, due to their excellent features resulting from the nanometer effect. In this work, novel nanomaterials, including carbon-based nanomaterials, zero-valent metal, metal-oxide based nanomaterials, and nanocomposites, and their applications for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater were systematically reviewed. Their efficiency, limitations, and advantages were compared and discussed. Furthermore, the promising perspective of nanomaterials in environmental applications was also discussed and potential directions for future work were suggested.

Nanomaterials for the Removal of Heavy Metals from Wastewater

Removal of noxious materials such as heavy metal ions (which are hazardous above certain ppm concentration) from wastewater is one of the biggest environmental challenges that suffers the economy nowadays. On the basis of their versatility, environmental friendliness, the adsorption was proved to be a most economical and efficient technology, which is used extensively for their removal from the aqueous media. Among the various developed adsorbents used so far, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) show a unique impact on the fast adsorption and rapid removal of noxious impurities from the aqueous source. CNTs festooned on the sources like activated carbon, nanoparticles, and nanocomposities enhanced the efficiency and potential of the adsorbent. Study on the removal of heavy metal ions from industry waste by carbon nanotubes: Effect of the surface modification: a review

Industrial wastewater polluted with various contaminants, including heavy metals, dyes, etc., endangers human health and the environment. Various separation techniques have been developed for the removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions. Adsorption process has drawn considerable attention due to its simplicity of design, high removal efficiency, even at dilute concentration, and economical aspect. We reviewed the most common two, three, four, and five parameter adsorption isotherm models corresponding to monolayer and multilayer adsorption on the basis of parameters that can be used for exploring novel adsorbents. Thermodynamic assumptions of the models give information about the surface properties, capacity of the adsorbent and adsorption mechanism. Seven error functions were investigated to evaluate the fitness quality of isotherm models with the experimental equilibrium data.

Monolayer and multilayer adsorption isotherm models for sorption from aqueous media

In the present study, removal of metal ions Pb (II) using nanostructured γ-alumina was investigated in a fixed-bed column. Comparison of Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and Adams-Bohart models with experimental kinetic results was done, and model parameters were evaluated by linear regression analysis for Pb2+ adsorption in different bed heights, initial concentrations, and flow rates. The obtained experimental data are in good agreement with Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models, but in the case of Adams-Bohart model, low correlation coefficient is observed.

BackgroundMarital conflicts bring about issues in marital relationships and increase the divorce rate. Sexual skill training can prevent some of the marital conflicts and sexual problems in women. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of schema therapy on sexual self-esteem in the women involved in marital conflicts in Ahvaz.MethodsThe study design was quasi-experimental. The study population comprised all women with marital conflicts who referred to the psychological centers of Ahvaz in 2019; using convenience sampling, we selected 30 women willing to participate in the project and randomly divided them into experimental (n=15) and control (n=15) groups. The research instrument included Marital Conflict Questionnaire (MCQ) and Sexual Self-Esteem Index for Woman-Short Form (SSEI-W-SF). The experimental group underwent eight sessions (90-minute sessions per week) of schema therapy. The follow-up was performed after 30 days. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 24.ResultsIn terms of sexual self-esteem, there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the pre-test stage. Schema therapy effectively increased sexual self-esteem in women involved in marital conflicts in the experimental group (P<0.001). The mean pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group were 106.26±8.05 and 128.76±6.77, respectively, which increased compared to the pre-test (107.13±6.71) and post-test (108.46±8.97) of the control group.ConclusionsSchema therapy can be employed to improve self-esteem in women involved in marital conflicts. In this way, the conflicts among couples and other family members can be reduced.
