Abstract: The nursing work conditions are surrounded by physical and chemical risks that result in a high number of absences as well as leaves. The purpose of this study was to characterize the absences of nursing workers from a University Hospital located in the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto-SP during the year of 1999. This is a census epidemiological investigation. Data were collected from registries of the Hospital Workers' Attendance Center. TL;DR: The evidence presented in this volume suggests that the answer is yes, but it will take strong leadership, coordinated efforts of federal, state, and municipal governments, direct engagement with the private health sector, and systematic but continuous vision, policies, and actions as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Hospitals are at the center of the health care universe in Brazil. When ill, many Brazilians go straight to the hospital for want of a family doctor or primary care network. Hospitals are a critical part of the government's budget, absorbing nearly 70 percent of public spending on health. Hospitals influence the ebb and flow of politician's careers when hospital mishaps hit the headlines or the limelight falls on high-performing hospitals. Hospitals are at the forefront of policy discussions in Brazil. The discussions reflect their promise as centers of technological innovation and medical advances as well as widespread concern about their cost and quality. Brazilian hospitals are important to many people for many different reasons. What makes hospitals important is easy to understand. What makes hospitals deliver quality care efficiently or not is much harder to grasp. Can Brazil improve the performance of its hospitals? The evidence presented in this volume suggests that the answer is yes. However, it will take strong leadership, coordinated efforts of federal, state, and municipal governments, direct engagement with the private health sector, and systematic but continuous vision, policies, and actions. Such enabling factors have been generally weak or absent in the Brazilian health system. Promising initiatives have often been gutted or scrapped after changes in government.

TL;DR: In this paper, the restriction of the urinary incontinence (UI) in a woman's daily life, considering the type of incongoing, and find out how women deal with that, was verified.
Abstract: Our purpose with this study was to verify the restriction of the urinary incontinence (UI) in a woman's daily life, considering the type of incontinence, and find out how women deal with that. It is a secondary analysis of data taken from a previous study that were obtained using open and closed questions. Interviews were held with 164 incontinent inpatients of gynecological and urological clinics of two hospital schools in the city of Campinas, in the State of Sao Paulo, with ages ranging from 25 to 85 years. Of this universe, 104 (64%) indicated one or more restrictions regarding their daily life activities, such as altered sexual (40.9%), social (33.5%), domestic (18.9%) and occupational activities (15.2%). Mixed urinary incon-tinence and urge incontinence were mentioned as that affected the most women's daily life. The disposable pad system was the most utilized strategy in dealing with UI. It was concluded that UI has a negative impact on the daily life of these women.

TL;DR: The QWLSI can provide an indication of workers' health well-being and of organizational performance in different areas of work life and suggests that prevention should focus on reduction of work hours, development of support and change in leadership style.
Abstract: Background: Although studies have shown that medical residents experience poor psychological health and poor organizational conditions, their quality of work life (QWL) had not been measured. A new tool, the Quality of Work Life Systemic Inventory (QWLSI), proposes to fill the gap in the definition and assessment of this concept. Aims: To confirm the convergent validity of the QWLSI, analyse Belgian medical residents' QWL with the QWLSI and discuss an intervention methodology based on the analysis of the QWLSI. Methods: One hundred and thirteen medical residents participated between 2002 and 2006. They completed the QWLSI, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Job Stress Survey to confirm the correspondence between these three tools. Results: Residents' low QWL predicted high emotional exhaustion (β = 0.282; P < 0.01) and job stress (β = 0.370; P < 0.001) levels, confirming the convergent validity. This sample of medical residents had an average QWL (μ = 5.8; SD = 3.1). However, their QWL was very low for three subscales: arrangement of work schedule (μ = 9; SD = 6.3), support offered to employee (μ = 7.6; SD = 6.1) and working relationship with superiors (μ = 6.9; SD = 5.3). Conclusions: The results confirm that the QWLSI can provide an indication of workers' health well-being and of organizational performance in different areas of work life. The problem factors found among Belgian medical residents suggest that prevention should focus on reduction of work hours, development of support and change in leadership style. © The Author 2011. TL;DR: The relation between female nurses and osteomuscular disturbances associated with their work is investigated and it is clear that Nursing professionals are exposed to a number of unfavorable conditions in their working environment.
Abstract: This study investigates the relation between female nurses and osteomuscular disturbances associated with their work. It is clear from the study that Nursing professionals are exposed to a number of unfavorable conditions in their working environment. Predominant complaints are related to the osteomuscular system, which affects mostly females due not only to the biological characteristics of women, but also because of the uneven distribution of work between genders that prevails nowadays.
