TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the highlights that have been achieved during the recent years worldwide and the state-of-the-art for most important efforts in the field of desalination by renewable energies, with emphasis on technologies and economics.
Abstract: Energy is an essential ingredient of socio-economic development and economic growth. Renewable energy provides a variable and environmental friendly option and national energy security at a time when decreasing global reserves of fossil fuels threatens the long-term sustainability of global economy. The integration of renewable resources in desalination and water purification is becoming increasingly attractive. This is justified by the fact that areas of fresh water shortages have plenty of solar energy and these technologies have low operating and maintenance costs. In this paper an attempt has been made to present a review, in brief, work of the highlights that have been achieved during the recent years worldwide and the state-of-the-art for most important efforts in the field of desalination by renewable energies, with emphasis on technologies and economics. The review also includes water sources, demand, availability of potable water and purification methods. The classification of distillation units has been done on the basis of literature survey till today. A comparative study between different renewable energy technologies powered desalination systems as well as economics have been done. The real problem in these technologies is the optimum economic design and evaluation of the combined plants in order to be economically viable for remote or arid regions. Wind energy technology is cheaper than the conventional ones, and used extensively around the world. The slow implementation of renewable energy projects especially in the developing countries are mostly due to the governments subsides of conventional fuels products and electricity. The economic analyses carried out so far have not been able to provide a strong basis for comparing economic viability of each desalination technology. The economic performances expressed in terms of cost of water production have been based on different system capacity, system energy source, system component, and water source. These differences make it difficult, if not impossible, to assess the economic performance of a particular technology and compare it with others. Reverse osmosis is becoming the technology of choice with continued advances being made to reduce the total energy consumption and lower the cost of water produced.

TL;DR: In this article, a single-stage three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system is implemented to realize the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), synchronization with the utility voltage, and harmonics reduction for output current.
Abstract: Single-stage grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems have advantages such as simple topology, high efficiency, etc. However, since all the control objectives such as the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), synchronization with the utility voltage, and harmonics reduction for output current need to be considered simultaneously, the complexity of the control scheme is much increased. This paper presents the implementation of a single-stage three-phase grid-connected PV system. In addition to realize the aforementioned control objectives, the proposed control can also remarkably improve the stability of the MPPT method with a modified incremental conductance MPPT method. The reactive power compensation for local load is also realized, so as to alleviate grid burden. A DSP is employed to implement the proposed MPPT controller and reactive power compensation unit. Simulation and experimental results show the high stability and high efficiency of this single-stage three-phase grid-connected PV system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an optimum design and control of a three-phase grid-connected PV system has been proposed and analyzed, and a developed maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller that uses the PV array differential power to voltage (dP/dV) as an index to provide the reference voltage of maximum point (MPP) quickly and accurately is presented.
Abstract: In this paper an optimum design and control of three-phase grid-connected PV system has been proposed and analyzed. Also, a developed maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller that uses the PV array differential power to voltage (dP/dV) as an index to provide the reference voltage of maximum power point (MPP) quickly and accurately is presented. The control scheme of a three phase current-controlled space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) inverter in rotating synchronous coordinate d-q with the proposed MPPT algorithm and feed-forward compensation is discussed. The PV grid-connected system controller employs multi-loop control with the filter inductor current of the inverter in the inner loop to achieve fast dynamic response and the outer loop to control dc bus voltage for MPPT. The design method provided in the paper for the controller parameters and filter proved to be very practical and effective. Both the power quality into the grid and power factor correction comply with standards IEEE 929-2000. Good agreement is obtained between simulation and experimental results which illustrated the high performance of the proposed approach.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare the merits and demerits of SVPWM, SINROW modulation, and one-cycle control for variable frequency and adjusting speed systems.
Abstract: Sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) are the most popular modulation strategies applied to variable frequency and adjusting speed systems, and there are diverges in comparing the merits and demerits of their own Also there is another modulation strategy called one-cycle control This paper gathers the three strategies and does some comparisons through simulation based on a simulation tool-PSIM, and has drawn some profitable conclusions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the key challenges facing membrane distillation and explore the opportunities for improving membrane membranes and system design, highlighting the outlook for MD desalination, highlighting challenges and key areas for future research and development.
Abstract: Energy-efficient desalination and water treatment technologies play a critical role in augmenting freshwater resources without placing an excessive strain on limited energy supplies. By desalinating high-salinity waters using low-grade or waste heat, membrane distillation (MD) has the potential to increase sustainable water production, a key facet of the water-energy nexus. However, despite advances in membrane technology and the development of novel process configurations, the viability of MD as an energy-efficient desalination process remains uncertain. In this review, we examine the key challenges facing MD and explore the opportunities for improving MD membranes and system design. We begin by exploring how the energy efficiency of MD is limited by the thermal separation of water and dissolved solutes. We then assess the performance of MD relative to other desalination processes, including reverse osmosis and multi-effect distillation, comparing various metrics including energy efficiency, energy quality, and susceptibility to fouling. By analyzing the impact of membrane properties on the energy efficiency of an MD desalination system, we demonstrate the importance of maximizing porosity and optimizing thickness to minimize energy consumption. We also show how ineffective heat recovery and temperature polarization can limit the energetic performance of MD and how novel process variants seek to reduce these inefficiencies. Fouling, scaling, and wetting can have a significant detrimental impact on MD performance. We outline how novel membrane designs with special surface wettability and process-based fouling control strategies may bolster membrane and process robustness. Finally, we explore applications where MD may be able to outperform established desalination technologies, increasing water production without consuming large amounts of electrical or high-grade thermal energy. We conclude by discussing the outlook for MD desalination, highlighting challenges and key areas for future research and development.

Abstract: This paper presents a review on the state-of-the-art maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques for PV power system applications. The main techniques that will be deliberated are the Perturb and Observe, Incremental Conductance and Hill Climbing. The coverage will also encompass their variations and adaptive forms. In addition, the more recent MPPT approaches using soft computing methods such as Fuzzy Logic Control, Artificial Neural Network and Evolutionary Algorithms are included. Whilst the paper provides as thorough treatment of MPPT at normal (uniform) insolation, its focus will be on the applications of the abovementioned techniques during partial shading conditions. It is envisaged that this review work will be a source of valuable information for PV professionals to keep abreast with the latest progress in this area, as well as for new researchers to get started on MPPT.
