Unsteady flow characteristics in centrifugal pump based on proper orthogonal decomposition method

Through numerical simulation and experiments analysis, it is indicated that the hydraulic and anticavitation performance of a centrifugal pump with twisted gap drainage blades based on flow control theory can be significantly improved under certain operating conditions. In order to introduce the technology of gap drainage to practical applications, we put forward the parameter formulas of the twisted gap drainage blade to design three-dimensional new type blade, which are also proved to be effective for enhancing the dynamic characteristics of the centrifugal pump. Furthermore, a practical centrifugal pump is redesigned to be a twisted gap drainage impeller with the same structure size as the original impeller, and the nonlinear hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS)/large eddy simulation (LES) method is employed to simulate the hydraulic dynamic characteristics. Numerical simulation results show that the hydraulic performance and dynamic characteristics of the redesigned impeller centrifugal pump are significantly enhanced. In experiments, the twisted gap drainage blades structure not only remarkably improves the hydraulic performance and the pressure pulsation characteristics of the centrifugal pump but also reduces the vibration intensity.

Research on Improving the Dynamic Performance of Centrifugal Pumps With Twisted Gap Drainage Blades

The unsteady flow field in a reversible pump-turbine is investigated during the continuous load rejection using a 3D computational fluid dynamic analysis. Numerical calculations are carried out using the detached eddy simulation (DES) turbulence model and a new approach involving automatic mesh motion. In this way, the instability of the flow field is analyzed by continuously changing the guide vane openings from the best efficiency point (BEP). Unsteady flow characteristics are described by post-processing signals for several monitoring points including mass flow, torque, head and pressure in the frequency and time-frequency domains. The formation of vortices of different scales is observed from the origin to further enlargement and stabilization; the effect of the rotating structures on the flow passage is analyzed, and the influence of unsteady flow development on the performance of the turbine is investigated. Finally, the evolution during the period of load rejection is characterized in order to determine the hydrodynamic conditions causing the vibrations in the machine.

Numerical Study on the Internal Flow Field of a Reversible Turbine during Continuous Guide Vane Closing

Hydraulic machinery mainly includes turbine and pump, which is closely related to national economy and people's livelihood involving aerospace industry, marine engineering, hydropower engineering, petroleum industry, chemical industry, mining industry, biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, agricultural water-soil engineering, etc.. The internal flow of hydraulic machinery is extremely complex, and its characteristics can be summarized as high Reynolds number, multi-scales, inhomogeneous and vortex-dominant unsteady turbulence which interact with the rotating dynamic boundary (rotor blade). Based on the analysis of the internal flow characteristics of hydraulic machinery, the author and his research team successively proposed a rotation correction model, a curvature corrected filter-based model, a scalable detached eddy simulation method, and a non-linear hybrid RANS/LES turbulence model to capture unsteady flow structures and then predict hydraulic performance and dynamic characteristics more accurately. According to the analysis on the internal flow, the corresponding flow control measures were put forward. It was verified by experiments that these methods could significantly improve the hydraulic performance, anti-cavitation performance and dynamic characteristics (pressure pulsation and vibration) of hydraulic machinery in a certain range of operating conditions. In addition, the mechanism how flow control measures influence internal flow was analyzed in depth, aiming at finding a feasible and effective way to improve hydraulic performance, anti-cavitation performance and dynamic characteristics of hydraulic machinery.

On the hydrodynamics of hydraulic machinery and flow control

A non-linear eddy viscosity model (NLEVM) and a scalable hybrid Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes/ large eddy simulation (RANS/LES) strategy are developed to improve the capability of the eddy viscosity model (EVM) to simulate complex flows featuring separations and unsteady motions To study the performance of the NLEVM, numerical simulations around S809 airfoil are carried out and the results show that the NLEVM performs much better when a large separation occurs Calculated results of the flow around a triangular cylinder show that the NLEVM can improve the precision of the flow fields to some extents, but the error is still considerable, and the small turbulence structures can not be clearly captured as the EVM Whereas the scalable hybrid RANS/LES model based on the NLEVM is fairly effective on resolving the turbulent structures and can give more satisfactory predictions of the flow fields
