Solid-state switch-mode rectification converters have reached a matured level for improving power quality in terms of power-factor correction (PFC), reduced total harmonic distortion at input AC mains and precisely regulated DC output in buck, boost, buck-boost and multilevel modes with unidirectional and bidirectional power flow. This paper deals with a comprehensive review of improved power quality converters (IPQCs) configurations, control approaches, design features, selection of components, other related considerations, and their suitability and selection for specific applications. It is targeted to provide a wide spectrum on the status of IPQC technology to researchers, designers and application engineers working on switched-mode AC-DC converters. A classified list of more than 450 research publications on the state of art of IPQC is also given for a quick reference.

A review of single-phase improved power quality AC-DC converters

One of the major difficulties facing researchers using neural networks is the selection of the proper size and topology of the networks. The problem is even more complex because often when the neural network is trained to very small errors, it may not respond properly for patterns not used in the training process. A partial solution proposed to this problem is to use the least possible number of neurons along with a large number of training patterns. The discussion consists of three main parts: first, different learning algorithms, including the Error Back Propagation (EBP) algorithm, the Levenberg Marquardt (LM) algorithm, and the recently developed Neuron-by-Neuron (NBN) algorithm, are discussed and compared based on several benchmark problems; second, the efficiency of different network topologies, including traditional Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) networks, Bridged Multilayer Perceptron (BMLP) networks, and Fully Connected Cascade (FCC) networks, are evaluated by both theoretical analysis and experimental results; third, the generalization issue is discussed to illustrate the importance of choosing the proper size of neural networks.

Selection of Proper Neural Network Sizes and Architectures—A Comparative Study

A light emitting diode (LED) lighting system includes a PFC and output voltage controller and a LED lighting power system. The controller advantageously operates from an auxiliary voltage less than a link voltage generated by the LED lighting power system. The common reference voltage allows all the components of lighting system to work together. A power factor correction switch and an LED drive current switch are coupled to the common reference node and have control node-to-common node, absolute voltage that allows the controller to control the conductivity of the switches. The LED lighting system can utilize feed forward control to concurrently modify power demand by the LED lighting power system and power demand of one or more LEDs. The LED lighting system can utilize a common current sense device to provide a common feedback signal to the controller representing current in at least two of the LEDs.

Power control system for current regulated light sources

The coexistence of ac and dc subgrids in a hybrid microgrid is likely given that modern distributed sources can either be ac or dc. Linking these subgrids is a power converter, whose topology should preferably be not too unconventional. This is to avoid unnecessary compromises to reliability, simplicity, and industry relevance of the converter. The desired operating features of the hybrid microgrid can then be added through this interlinking converter. To demonstrate, an appropriate control scheme is now developed for controlling the interlinking converter. The objective is to keep the hybrid microgrid in autonomous operation with active power proportionally shared among its distributed sources. Power sharing here should depend only on the source ratings and not their placements within the hybrid microgrid. The proposed scheme can also be extended to include energy storage within the interlinking converter, as already proven in simulation and experiment. These findings have not been previously discussed in the literature, where existing schemes are mostly for an ac or a dc microgrid, but not both in coexistence.

Autonomous Control of Interlinking Converters with Energy Storages in Hybrid AC-DC Microgrids

Rising energy costs, losses in the present-day electricity grid, risks from nuclear power generation, and global environmental changes are motivating a transformation of the conventional ways of generating electricity. Globally, there is a desire to rely more on renewable energy resources (RERs) for electricity generation. RERs reduce greenhouse gas emissions and may have economic benefits, e.g., through applying demand side management with dynamic pricing so as to shift loads from fossil fuel-based generators to RERs. The electricity grid is presently evolving toward an intelligent grid, the so-called smart grid (SG). One of the major goals of the future SG is to move toward 100% electricity generation from RERs, i.e., toward a 100% renewable grid. However, the disparate, intermittent, and typically widely geographically distributed nature of RERs complicates the integration of RERs into the SG. Moreover, individual RERs have generally lower capacity than conventional fossil fuel-based plants, and these RERs are based on a wide spectrum of different technologies. In this article, we give an overview of recent efforts that aim to integrate RERs into the SG. We outline the integration of RERs into the SG along with their supporting communication networks. We also discuss ongoing projects that seek to integrate RERs into the SG around the globe. Finally, we outline future research directions on integrating RERs into the SG.

Integrating Renewable Energy Resources Into the Smart Grid: Recent Developments in Information and Communication Technologies

For wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, communication between the primary side and the pickup side is a challenge because of the large air gap and magnetic interferences. A novel method, which integrates bidirectional data communication into a high-power WPT system, is proposed in this paper. The power and data transfer share the same inductive link between coreless coils. Power/data frequency division multiplexing technique is applied, and the power and data are transmitted by employing different frequency carriers and controlled independently. The circuit model of the multiband system is provided to analyze the transmission gain of the communication channel, as well as the power delivery performance. The crosstalk interference between two carriers is discussed. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratios of the channels are also estimated, which gives a guideline for the design of mod/demod circuits. Finally, a 500-W WPT prototype has been built to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed WPT system.

Wireless Power and Data Transfer via a Common Inductive Link Using Frequency Division Multiplexing

This paper describes a design methodology to achieve optimal performance for a short-stroke single-phase tubular permanent-magnet motor which drives a reciprocating vapor compressor. The steady-state characteristic of the direct-drive linear-motor compressor system is analyzed, an analytical formula for predicting iron loss is presented, and a motor-design procedure which takes into account the effect of compressor loads under nominal operating condition is formulated. It is shown that the motor efficiency can be optimized with respect to two leading dimensional ratios. Experimental results validate the proposed design methodology.

Design Optimization of Short-Stroke Single-Phase Tubular Permanent-Magnet Motor for Refrigeration Applications

This paper proposes a novel sampling algorithm for digital signal processing (DSP) controlled 2 kW power factor correction (PFCs) converters, which can improve switching noise immunity greatly in average-current-control power supplies. Based on the newly developed DSP chip TMS320F240. a 2 kW PFC stage is implemented. The novel sampling algorithm shows great advantages when the converter operates at a frequency above 30 kHz.

Novel sampling algorithm for DSP controlled 2 kW PFC converter

The energy Internet concept has been considered as a new development stage of the smart grid, which aims to increase the energy transmission efficiency and optimize the energy dispatching in time and space. Energy router is a core device in the energy Internet and it connects all the devices together into a net structure and manages power flows among them. The research work presented in this paper described the energy router's structure and function expectations from the network perspective, and improved the existing energy router design. Open shortest path first (OSPF) protocol and virtual circuit switching mode are referenced from the Internet in the energy local area network (e-LAN) design. This paper proposed a design of an energy routing algorithm based on graph theory in an e-LAN. A lowest cost routing selection algorithm is designed according to the features of power transmission, and a source selection and routing design algorithm is proposed for very heavy load conditions. Both algorithms have been verified by case analyses.

A Graph Theory Based Energy Routing Algorithm in Energy Local Area Network

A novel online-modeling scheme for the switched reluctance motor (SRM) using a B-spline neural network (BSNN) is proposed in this paper. A 2-D BSNN is designed to learn the nonlinear-flux-linkage characteristic of an SRM online and in real-time. Torque, incremental inductance, and back-emf estimates can be derived from the BSNN after training. The scheme does not require a priori knowledge of the SRM electromagnetic characteristics. Simulation and experimental results show that the scheme has a good estimation performance and robustness at low to medium motor speed.
