TL;DR: A new discrete reaching law with improved quasi-sliding-mode domain (QSMD) is proposed and a sliding-mode controller is designed for discrete-time systems with uncertainties by redefining the change rate as the second-order difference of the system uncertainties and adopting the continuous-approximate function.
Abstract: In this paper, a new discrete reaching law with improved quasi-sliding-mode domain (QSMD) is proposed and a sliding-mode controller is designed for discrete-time systems with uncertainties. By redefining the change rate as the second-order difference of the system uncertainties and adopting the continuous-approximate function, smaller width of the QSMD can be guaranteed. Moreover, the QSMD of the proposed reaching law is obtained and the system dynamics in and out the QSMD are theoretically analyzed. Perturbation estimation technique is employed to estimate the unknown uncertainties. Thus, no prior knowledge of the uncertainty bound is required. Both numerical simulations and experimental results on a piezoelectric actuator are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

TL;DR: A novel reaching law for discrete-time sliding-mode control is proposed based on an exponential term that dynamically adapts to the variation of the switching function that is able to guarantee smaller width of the quasi-sliding-mode domain (QSMD).
Abstract: In this paper, a novel reaching law for discrete-time sliding-mode control is proposed. The reaching law is established based on an exponential term that dynamically adapts to the variation of the switching function. The difference function is also employed to redefine the change rate as the second-order difference of the disturbance. Unlike existing works, the proposed reaching law is able to guarantee smaller width of the quasi-sliding-mode domain (QSMD) while decreasing the reaching time in the same time. The ultimate magnitude of the QSMD in proposed method is of the order O ( T 3). Moreover, the reaching steps for the system to converge to the sliding surface are obtained and the system dynamics in and out the QSMD are theoretically analyzed. Both numerical simulations and experimental investigations on a piezoelectric actuator are employed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

TL;DR: It is proved that away from configuration singularity, there exists a projection from the joint space to parameterize the configuration space and a concept of transforming force to the generalized force space so that all the other forces and torque can be considered.
Abstract: Studies the dynamics of parallel manipulators. We first have a brief review and discussion on different dynamics formulations in the literature (Newton-Euler, direct Lagrangian, and Lagrange-D'Alembert formulation on the reduced system). Then we show the equivalence of these methods. Based on the concepts from differential manifolds, we prove that away from configuration singularity, there exists a projection from the joint space to parameterize the configuration space. The fact that the dynamics is well defined even at actuators singularity, end-effector singularity and other kinds of parameterization singularity is highlighted. For the method of reduced systems, there are two main drawbacks. Firstly the joints being cut for forming the tree system are presumed to have no external torque. Secondly the force and torque applied to other links of the manipulator is not considered. We propose two methods to remedy the situation. Firstly by cutting a link instead of a joint, all the joints torque can be incorporated into our equations of motion. This is useful not only for the case of actuating all the joints, but also if we consider compensating the joints friction. Secondly we propose a concept of transforming force to the generalized force space so that all the other forces and torque can be considered.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of cutting dynamics on the machining process is discussed and a thorough review on pros and cons of HSMC can help to effectively utilize its advantages and circumvent its shortcomings.
Abstract: The research and application of high speed metal cutting (HSMC) is aimed at achieving higher productivity and improved surface quality. This paper reviews the advancements in HSMC with a focus on the material removal mechanism and machined surface integrity without considering the effect of cutting dynamics on the machining process. In addition, the variation of cutting force and cutting temperature as well as the tool wear behavior during HSMC are summarized. Through comparing with conventional machining (or called as normal speed machining), the advantages of HSMC are elaborated from the aspects of high material removal rate, good finished surface quality (except surface residual stress), low cutting force, and low cutting temperature. Meanwhile, the shortcomings of HSMC are presented from the aspects of high tool wear rate and tensile residual stress on finished surface. The variation of material dynamic properties at high cutting speeds is the underlying mechanism responsible for the transition of chip morphology and material removal mechanism. Less surface defects and lower surface roughness can be obtained at a specific range of high cutting speeds, which depends on the workpiece material and cutting conditions. The thorough review on pros and cons of HSMC can help to effectively utilize its advantages and circumvent its shortcomings. Furthermore, the challenges for advancing and future research directions of HSMC are highlighted. Particularly, to reveal the relationships among inherent attributes of workpiece materials, processing parameters during HSMC, and evolution of machined surface properties will be a potential breakthrough direction. Although the influence of cutting speed on the material removal mechanism and surface integrity has been studied extensively, it still requires more detailed investigations in the future with continuous increase in cutting speed and emergence of new engineering materials in industries.

TL;DR: Topology optimization is the process of determining the optimal layout of material and connectivity inside a design domain this paper, which is the same as the problem of finding the optimal configuration of a set of components.
Abstract: Topology optimization is the process of determining the optimal layout of material and connectivity inside a design domain. This paper surveys topology optimization of continuum structures from the year 2000 to 2012. It focuses on new developments, improvements, and applications of finite element-based topology optimization, which include a maturation of classical methods, a broadening in the scope of the field, and the introduction of new methods for multiphysics problems. Four different types of topology optimization are reviewed: (1) density-based methods, which include the popular Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) technique, (2) hard-kill methods, including Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO), (3) boundary variation methods (level set and phase field), and (4) a new biologically inspired method based on cellular division rules. We hope that this survey will provide an update of the recent advances and novel applications of popular methods, provide exposure to lesser known, yet promising, techniques, and serve as a resource for those new to the field. The presentation of each method's focuses on new developments and novel applications.

TL;DR: The convergence behavior of the optimization process is discussed, as well as control over the slope and smoothness of thelevel-set function, hole nucleation and the relation of level-set methods to other topology optimization methods.
Abstract: This review paper provides an overview of different level-set methods for structural topology optimization. Level-set methods can be categorized with respect to the level-set-function parameterization, the geometry mapping, the physical/mechanical model, the information and the procedure to update the design and the applied regularization. Different approaches for each of these interlinked components are outlined and compared. Based on this categorization, the convergence behavior of the optimization process is discussed, as well as control over the slope and smoothness of the level-set function, hole nucleation and the relation of level-set methods to other topology optimization methods. The importance of numerical consistency for understanding and studying the behavior of proposed methods is highlighted. This review concludes with recommendations for future research.

TL;DR: In this article, a convolutional neural network (CNN) based approach for fault diagnosis of rotating machinery is presented, which incorporates sensor fusion by taking advantage of the CNN structure to achieve higher and more robust diagnosis accuracy.
Abstract: This paper presents a convolutional neural network (CNN) based approach for fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. The proposed approach incorporates sensor fusion by taking advantage of the CNN structure to achieve higher and more robust diagnosis accuracy. Both temporal and spatial information of the raw data from multiple sensors is considered during the training process of the CNN. Representative features can be extracted automatically from the raw signals. It avoids manual feature extraction or selection, which relies heavily on prior knowledge of specific machinery and fault types. The effectiveness of the developed method is evaluated by using datasets from two types of typical rotating machinery, roller bearings, and gearboxes. Compared with traditional approaches using manual feature extraction, the results show the superior diagnosis performance of the proposed method. The present approach can be extended to fault diagnosis of other machinery with various types of sensors due to its end to end feature learning capability.
