In situ observation of nanograin rotation and deformation in nacre.

TL;DR: In situ dynamic atomic force microscope observations of nacre with aragonite nanograins of an average grain size of 32 nm show that nanograin rotation and deformation are the two prominent mechanisms contributing to energy dissipation in nacre.
Journal ArticleDOI

Friction and wear behavior of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene as a function of polymer crystallinity

TL;DR: The friction, wear and surface mechanical behavior of medical-grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) (GUR 1050 resin) were evaluated as a function of polymer crystallinity and it was shown that an increase in crystallinity resulted in lower friction force and lower wear depth and width.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of equi-biaxial residual stress on unloading behaviour of nanoindentation

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of residual stress on the unloading behavior of nanoindentation on elastic-plastic strain-hardening materials was investigated and it was found that the real contact area and the elastic recovery of indentation can be correlated to the existing residual stress and that there is a linear relationship between the A c / A g or h e / h max ratio and the σ r / σ y ratio.
Journal ArticleDOI

Determination of mechanical properties of Al–Mg alloys dissimilar friction stir welded interface by indentation methods

TL;DR: In this article, a series of friction stir welds was produced between heat treated Al-Mg-Si and strain hardened Mg-Al-Zn alloy sheets, and micro and nanoindentation characterization methods were used to evaluate the mechanical properties at the interface, including the fracture toughness.
Journal ArticleDOI

Elastic modulus of biopolymer matrix in nacre measured using coupled atomic force microscopy bending and inverse finite element techniques

TL;DR: In this paper, a novel approach combining the atomic force microscopy probing of nacre biopolymer strand and the inverse finite element analysis has been used to directly measure the elastic modulus of Nacre Biopolymer matrix.
