TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed new catalyst recipes for successful growth of vertically aligned CNTs on ALD-Al2O3 coated silicon and quartz substrates, achieving lengths of 90 and 180 cm on silicon and 90 cm on quartz, respectively.
Abstract: The smooth surface of the amorphous Al2O3 film on either silicon or quartz, coated by atomic layer deposition (ALD), was changed to rough surface by annealing in either air or hydrogen at high temperature (745°C) due to the formation of nanosized pinholes and micrometre pimples during the crystallisation of the amorphous Al2O3. The rough surface makes the growth of long carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by chemical vapour deposition impossible. Nevertheless, we were able to develop new catalyst recipes for successful growth of vertically aligned CNTs on ALD-Al2O3 coated silicon and quartz substrates. The lengths of the CNTs reached 90 µm on silicon substrates and 180 µm on quartz substrates. Furthermore, it is observed that the adhesion of CNTs on silicon substrates is much stronger than that on quartz substrates.

TL;DR: In this article, photoluminescence mapping (PL-mapping) and time-domain thermo-photoluminecence (TDTP) were proposed to obtain a real-time image of crystal quality and the indirect bandgap of BAs.
Abstract: Cubic boron arsenide (BAs) is attracting greater attention due to the recent experimental demonstration of ultrahigh thermal conductivity \k{appa} above 1000 W/mK. However, its bandgap has not been settled and a simple yet effective method to probe its crystal quality is missing. Furthermore, traditional \k{appa} measurement methods are destructive and time consuming, thus they cannot meet the urgent demand for fast screening of high \k{appa} materials. After we experimentally established 1.82 eV as the indirect bandgap of BAs and observed room-temperature band-edge photoluminescence, we developed two new optical techniques that can provide rapid and non-destructive characterization of \k{appa} with little sample preparation: photoluminescence mapping (PL-mapping) and time-domain thermo-photoluminescence (TDTP). PL-mapping provides nearly real-time image of crystal quality and \k{appa} over mm-sized crystal surfaces; while TDTP allows us to pick up any spot on the sample surface and measure its \k{appa} using nanosecond laser pulses. These new techniques reveal that the apparent single crystals are not only non-uniform in \k{appa}, but also are made of domains of very distinct \k{appa}. Because PL-mapping and TDTP are based on the band-edge PL and its dependence on temperature, they can be applied to other semiconductors, thus paving the way for rapid identification and development of high-\k{appa} semiconducting materials.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the combination of Se alloying and Sb doping is successful in improving the thermoelectric properties of Te.
Abstract: Phonon scattering through alloying is a highly effective way to reduce lattice thermal conductivity due to the mass difference between the host and alloyed atoms and strains caused by the different atoms. In this work we investigate the thermoelectric properties of Te between 323 and 623 K. By varying the alloying concentration of Se, a minimum lattice thermal conductivity was achieved with ∼10% (by stoichiometry) alloying of Te by Se. Additionally, Sb has been used as a dopant to increase the carrier concentration of the system. With reduced lattice thermal conductivity by Se alloying and increased carrier concentration by Sb doping, the room-temperature figure of merit ( ZT) increased by 60%, leading to an average ZT of ∼0.8 in Te0.88Se0.10Sb0.02, which corresponds to an engineering figure of merit ( ZT)eng ∼ 0.5 between 323 and 623 K and an efficiency of ∼8% in the same temperature range. The results indicate that the combination of Se alloying and Sb doping is successful in improving the thermoelectric properties of Te.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that a significant ZT improvement can be achieved in nanocrystalline bulk materials by hot-pressing nanopowders that are ball-milled from either crystalline ingots or elements.
Abstract: The dimensionless thermoelectric figure-of-merit (ZT) in bulk materials has remained about 1 for many years. Here we show that a significant ZT improvement can be achieved in nanocrystalline bulk materials. These nanocrystalline bulk materials were made by hot-pressing nanopowders that are ball-milled from either crystalline ingots or elements. Electrical transport measurements, coupled with microstructure studies and modeling, show that the ZT improvement is the result of low thermal conductivity caused by the increased phonon scattering by grain boundaries and defects. More importantly, the nanostructure approach has been demonstrated in a few thermoelectric material systems, proving its generosity. The approach can be easily scaled up to multiple tons. Thermal stability studies have shown that the nanostructures are stable at the application temperature for an extended period of time. It is expected that such enhanced materials will make the existing cooling and power generation systems more efficient.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

Abstract: Many potential applications have been proposed for carbon nanotubes, including conductive and high-strength composites; energy storage and energy conversion devices; sensors; field emission displays and radiation sources; hydrogen storage media; and nanometer-sized semiconductor devices, probes, and interconnects. Some of these applications are now realized in products. Others are demonstrated in early to advanced devices, and one, hydrogen storage, is clouded by controversy. Nanotube cost, polydispersity in nanotube type, and limitations in processing and assembly methods are important barriers for some applications of single-walled nanotubes.
