TL;DR: In this article, a load frequency control of a small scale microgrid consisting of wind, solar, diesel generator and fuel cell as power generating sources and battery, flywheel and aqua electrolyzer as energy storage elements is discussed.
Abstract: This paper deals with the load frequency control of a small scale microgrid consisting of wind, solar, diesel generator and fuel cell as power generating sources and battery, flywheel and aqua electrolyzer as energy storage elements. To improve the load frequency control, the controllers are properly tuned so as to reduce the mismatch between the real power generation and the load demand leading to minimum power and frequency deviations. A systematic approach to obtain frequency bias parameter followed by tuning the gains of Proportional, Integral and Derivative controller (PID) using Integral Square Time Error evaluation criterion (ITSE)and Ziegler Nichols method respectively is proposed. The simulation studies are carried out for different cases and it is found that the dynamic responses of the frequency and power of the microgrid is quite acceptable.

TL;DR: In this article, a stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system is presented for water pumping, which can provide a cost-effective use of solar energy for irrigation and drinking water.
Abstract: In this paper a stand-alone Photovoltaic (PV) systems is presented for water pumping. Solar PV water pumping systems are used for irrigation and drinking water. PV based pumping systems without battery can provide a cost-effective use of solar energy. For the purpose of improving efficiency of the system perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm based Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) is connected to this system. The aim of this paper is to show how to achieve an effective photovoltaic pumping system without battery storage. Results are presented based on different cases of irrigation pumping application and availability of solar irradiance. Simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK show that the performance of the controllers both in transient as well as in steady state is quite satisfactory.

TL;DR: In this paper, a configuration of a single-phase bidirectional AC-DC converter and a single phase buck-boost dc-dc converter is proposed to transfer electrical power from the grid to an electrical vehicle (EV) and from an EV to the grid while keeping improved power factor of the grid.
Abstract: In this paper, a configuration of a single-phase bidirectional AC-DC converter and bidirectional DC-DC converter is proposed to transfer electrical power from the grid to an electrical vehicle (EV) and from an EV to the grid while keeping improved power factor of the grid In first stage, a 230 V 50 Hz AC supply is converted in to 380V dc using a single-phase bidirectional AC-DC converter and in the second stage, a bidirectional buck-boost dc-dc converter is used to charge and discharge the battery of the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) In discharging mode, it delivers energy back to the grid at 230V, 50 Hz A battery with the charging power of 12 kW at 120V is used in PHEV The buck-boost DC-DC converter is used in buck mode to charge and in a boost mode to discharge the battery A proportional-integral (PI) controller is used to control the charging current and voltage Simulated results validate the effectiveness of proposed algorithm and the feasibility of system

TL;DR: Application of genetic algorithm for optimal coordination of OC relays in a loops distribution system using graph theory to avoid misoperation of relays is discussed.
Abstract: Coordination of overcurrent relays in a meshed distribution system is a challenge task for the protection engineers. Initially it was done manually. Linear and non-linear programming optimizing techniques are very frequently used for Coordination of overcurrent relays. Presently artificial intelligence is applied for optimal co-ordination of Overcurrent (OC) relays. This paper discusses application of genetic algorithm for optimal coordination of OC relays in a loops distribution system. Combination of primary and backup relay is chosen by using graph theory, to avoid misoperation of relays.

TL;DR: In this article, the tuning of a PI controller using PSO techniques for autonomous hybrid energy generation/energy storage system is discussed, where the computational intelligence has opened paths to a new generation of advanced process control.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is the tuning of a PI controller using PSO techniques for autonomous hybrid energy generation/energy storage system. The autonomous hybrid generation system consisting of wind turbine generators (WTG), solar photovoltaic (PV), diesel engine generators (DEG), fuel cells (FC), battery energy storage system (BESS), ultra capacitors ( UC) and aqua electrolyzer (AE) has been considered for simulation studies. The power system frequency deviates for sudden changes in load or generation or the both. The comparative performance of the controllers installed to alleviate this frequency deviation for different hybrid systems, is carried out using time domain simulation. In practice, PI controller is tuned manually which is difficult and time consuming. The computational intelligence has opened paths to a new generation of advanced process control. Here, PSO is used for optimization of controller gains of the proposed hybrid system. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the PSO based controller in terms of reduced settling time, overshoot and oscillations. The results are compared with conventional controller.
