Abstract: The paper presents a methodology to reduce the energy consumption of visual sensor node in wireless sensor networks. This methodology, based on a balancing between processing and transmission tasks, can be applied in all those situations where subjective image based measurements are required. Considering that in a sensor node, the communication task is the most energy consumption, the proposed method tries to find the best compression ratio able to give a significant reduction of transmission time, returning adequate and objective image quality and compression time. Some results are presented applying the proposed methodology to the particular case study: the use of wireless visual sensors to the remote metering of water counters.

Abstract: In recent years, steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interface (BCI) has received much attentions. However, most SSVEP based BCI devices are not portable and have high price, which are not suitable to be used for clinical and commercial purpose. Thanks to the low cost and portable Emotiv EPOC, it brings BCI into daily life. In this paper, SSVEP based BCI through Emotiv EPOC is implemented. BCI 2000 is employed to connect Emotiv EPOC and Matlab to implement the online system. The online experiments have the accuracy of 95.83±3.59 %, information transfer rate (ITR) with 22.85±1.85 bits/min and detection duration of 5.25±2.14 sec.

Abstract: This paper presents a new concept of low-cost, high-resolution, lightweight, compact and highly-portable tactile display. The prototype consists of an array of 8 /spl times/ 8 upward/downward independent moveable pins based on shape memory alloy (SMA) technology. Each actuator is capable of developing a 320 mN pull force at 1.5 Hz bandwidth by using simple forced-air convection. The proposed concept allows the development of 60 g weight tactile devices of compact dimensions easily carried in the user's hand. SMA active element, tactile actuator and tactile display are presented and discussed.

Abstract: Convincing binaural sound reproduction via headphones requires filtering the virtual sound source signals with head related transfer functions (HRTFs). Furthermore, humans are able to improve their localization capabilities by small unconscious head movements. Therefore it is important to incorporate head-tracking. This yields the problem of high-quality, time-varying interpolation between different HRTFs. A further improvement of human localization accuracy can be done by considering room simulation yielding a huge amount of virtual sound sources. To increase the computational efficiency of the proposed system, a virtual ambisonic approach is used, that result in a bank of time-invariant HRTF filter independent of the number of sources to encode.

Abstract: One of the key factors behind successful deployment of Cloud for on demand services is the optimal utilization of its virtual resources. A poorly managed cloud application may lead to huge cost which is even more than the cost of physical deployment. The most important issues in Cloud are the scalability and availability. A highly scalable deployment may lead to poor resource utilization whereas a low scalable deployment may lead to unavailability of services. This paper proposes architecture for optimal utilization of such resources considering both scalability and availability. The proposed architecture, named as Monitoring & Optimizing Virtual Resources (MOVR) architecture, manages and optimizes the usage of the resources required by a cloud application considering auto deployment, auto scaling and auto recovery of the provisioned resources for the application.
