Abstract: In this paper, we introduce hardware exercises for Computer Architecture/Organization Education at the University of Aizu, Japan. Particularly, we discuss a pipelined RISC processor design and implementation on Xilinx FPGA chip.

Education in computer science and computer engineering starts with computer architecture

Abstract: At The University of Michigan, the first required course in both the Computer Science curriculum and the Computer Engineering curriculum starts with the basics of computer architecture. This change in the curriculum started in Fall semester, 1995, after years of frustration with the results of the first course, which conventional wisdom dictates ought to be a high level language programming course. This paper describes the contents of this first course, The paper also includes some observations, having taught the course twice (Fall, 1995, Winter, 1996).

Using rapid prototyping in computer architecture design laboratories

Abstract: This paper describes the undergraduate computer architecture courses and laboratories introduced at Georgia Tech during the past two years. A core sequence of six required courses for computer engineering students has been developed. In this paper, emphasis is placed upon the new core laboratories which utilize commercial CAD tools, FPGAs, hardware emulators, and a VHDL based rapid prototyping approach to simulate, synthesize, and implement prototype computer hardware.

Computer architecture education at the University of Illinois: current status and some thoughts

Abstract: The University of Illinois has traditionally been a major center for computer architecture education and research in the nation. This short paper briefly describes the computer architecture curriculum at the University of Illinois and discusses a few ideas for improving the computer architecture education of our students. In particular, to improve the education of undergraduates, we suggest a higher emphasis on parallel architectures and programming, and the provision of practical experiences. For graduate students, we argue about the need to develop close links with industry and educate graduate students from other scientific and engineering disciplines.
