From the point of view of this paper, these conditions are determined by the spatial conceptualization embeded in the social processes that produce those items. So, the description and analysis of the strategies of visibilization existing within social actions could be used as a resource to interpret the archaeological record and reconstruct the cultural rationalities what produced it. This paper reviews the concepts of Material Culture and Archaeological Record. At the same time it deals with the major problems of interpreting the archaeological record and suggests the use of anthropological models of cultural rationality as a way to overcome the limits of interpretation in Archaeology. These proposals are adopted as a theoretical basis for the reconstruction of past social landscape. read more read less

In this paper, results from recent archaeological field work carried out in the Neolithic village of Mas d’Is (Penaguila, Alicante) are presented. We focus on an important set of domestic and monumental architectural structures. Integration of data from the site in a regional context allows us to rethink the social relations of the first farmers in the area. At the same time, radiocarbon data from our excavations show a finer chronology of the neolithization in Western Mediterranean, and what is more important to approach its historical process. read more read less

In the present paper we systematically evaluate the radiometric database underlying the Middle to Upper Palaeolithc transition in southwestern Europe. The different models which attempt to explain the demographical processes underlying this transition rely to a large degree on radiocarbon chronology. We observe that: 1) with increasing age, dates on bone samples show large offsets against those on charcoal, often underestimating these for several thousand years BP and; 2) there is no proof for a persistence of Middle Palaeolithic industries into the time of the earliest Aurignacian in SW Europe. These data contradict the “Ebro- Frontier” model that distinguishes Late Middle Palaeolithic industries in the SW of the Iberian Peninsula from early Aurignacian ones in the NE. On the contrary, our data 3) imply a model of interregional shifts of populations contracting during severe cold and arid phases and expanding under warmer, interstadial conditions, raising ideas on a regional in situ development of the SW European Aurignacian out of Latest Middle Palaeolithic industries made by Neanderthals some 40.0 kyr cal BC. read more read less

Data and reflections are provided for the discussion of the importance of the Beaker in the funeral practices of the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, in the context of aresearch project which showed population continuity during Late Prehistory, on the Southern Meseta At the moment, the most widespread proposals, that tend to understand the famous decorated pottery as the visualization of individuality as opposed to megalithic collectivism, show serious problems of generalization when a necropolis as important as Ciempozuelos can be understood like groups of artificial caves Indeed these structures, in addition to chambers with a false vault, are those that define the necropolis of the Higueras Valley, reiterating characteristic associations of the West Chalcolithic necropolis The C14 dates show a chronology between 3400 and 1900 cal BC, therefore at absolutely contemporary moments to the classic examples of the Iberian Peninsula From half way through the third millennium cal BC incised Beaker pottery is present in these grave goods, thereby placing it in a very close chronological relationship with the rest of the styles read more read less

La sierra de Atapuerca durante el Holoceno: datos preliminares sobre las ocupaciones de la Edad del Bronce en la Cueva de El Mirador (Ibeas de Juarros, Burgos)

The paper presents data from the El Mirador cave, part of the Sierra de Atapuerca project. The data deriving from the first two stratigraphical excavation campaigns (1999 and 2000) are illustrated. A 2.5-m thick Holocene succession, containing Neolithic and Bronze Age occupations, was excavated and sampled using a multidisciplinary perspective. Preliminary data on the Bronze Age occupations indicate the utilization of the rock-shelter for various activities, among them animal stabling, habitation and burial. Animal stabling led to the accumulation of characteristic burnt layers, never seen before in the Meseta region or in wider European context. A Bronze Age collective burial showing evidence of pre-treatment of bodies before their deposition, and a stratified metal axe, were also found. read more read less
