People by and large manage organisational complexity intuitively and of course in the process they make more or less costly mistakes. These failures tend to be archetypical in the sense that they are relational patterns that recur in many organisations. Their observation facilitates diagnosing organisational identity and structural shortcomings. The danger is the temptation to converge too quickly into diagnostic points, thus stifling necessary appreciative processes. Hence, the paper finishes with a critical reflection about their use. Stafford Beer's Viable System Model (VSM) is used as a reference model to observe these archetypes. read more read less

Common practice has proven that software implementations of environmental models are seldom reused by broader communities or in different modelling frameworks. One of the reasons for this situation is the poor semantics of model interfaces. Model interfaces embrace a critical amount of the modellers’ knowledge, but their software implementations can be considered as ‘poor reflections’ of modellers’ perceptions, as they fail to represent the complexity of model assumptions in software terms. This paper addresses the problem by adopting an ontology-driven approach that aims to enrich software model interfaces with advanced semantics. read more read less

The Structured Dialogic Design Process (SDDP) is applied in the context of a rich web-based communication environment. Using a combination of asynchronous and synchronous communication tools for engaging stakeholders at different places in a disciplined dialogue, the authors evaluate whether SDDP can deliver reasonably effective and useful results at a shorter time and at a lower cost to the participants and the sponsors of the dialogue. This new 'technology of democracy' is based on experience acquired from four virtual co-laboratories, during which different components of the revised SDDP methodology were tested. read more read less

Challenging economic and religious fundamentalisms: implications for the state, the market and 'the enemies within'
Janet McIntyre-Mills1

Abstract:

Democracy is currently increasingly criticised for not representing the interests of citizens (Institute of Governance, 2005) or not taking into account the social justice and environmental concerns that span national boundaries (Singer, 2002). Democracy is currently increasingly criticised for not representing the interests of citizens (Institute of Governance, 2005) or not taking into account the social justice and environmental concerns that span national boundaries (Singer, 2002). What is knowledge? Who decides? How can we prevent losing knowledge? How can knowledge sharing be facilitated in the interests of sustainable futures? The contribution attempts to address some of these questions. The discussion is premised on the idea that there are many bodies of knowledge and that the challenge is to ask questions that will enable the appropriate knowledge to be matched contextually to a task, challenge or problem (Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics, Irwin, 1985). read more read less
