Product-service innovation and performance: Unveiling the complexities

The purpose of this paper is to unveil the existing complexities in the relationship between product-service innovation (PSI) - or servitisation - and firm performance that arise from the mismatch between theoretical predictions and empirical evidence. Whilst theoretical work suggests that there are a number of advantages for implementing PSI, quantitative firm-level evidence is not conclusive about the positive effects of this type of innovation on firm performance. By reviewing the relevant publications dealing with the PSI-performance relationship, their methodological approach, the novel constructs validated and the role of mediators/moderators found in the servitisation literature, we argue that further contextualisation is needed to solve this puzzle. Additionally, this work systematically organises the different methods and variables used to assess the PSI-performance link, guiding scholars on the choice between different methods and measures. This work enumerates various streams of future research to discover unexplored fields to better ground this relationship, including the development of solid configurational theories, appropriate fit between theory and measurement techniques and new sampling strategies for performing longitudinal studies. read more read less

Coopetition strategies have been recognised as complex and dynamic inter-organisational phenomena. Yet, the heterogeneity of coopetition has very seldom been empirically investigated. Our study contributes to fill this gap by exploring coopetition strategies adopted on the polish energy market. We test the relationship-intensity-based coopetition typology with behavioural variables. The serial case study conducted on 20 firms unveils coopetition as the juxtaposition of competition and collaboration in active and passive forms, yielding nine instead of four theoretically possible coopetition types. Our results also suggest that mandated coopetition displays moderate or weak levels, while resource-driven coopetition is active. read more read less

The formation of coopetition is often triggered by a certain institutional context where the public sector pushes competing co-located companies to cooperate with each other. This situation is particularly important in the tourism sector where relevant public stakeholders support a collaborative attitude and practice among tourism businesses. In this paper, we focus on the role of the public sphere in creating the conditions for the private sector to shift from a constant sum to a variable sum game, wherein public-private partnerships can help private businesses to achieve win-win situations. More specifically, our comparative study shows that public-private relationships are crucial over time in order to strengthen coopetition thus contributing to better development and promotion of a tourism destination and to the improvement of the dialogue inside a business agglomeration. read more read less

Especially larger and multinational enterprises demonstrate their community involvement with the help of their personnel resources. However, apart from individual documentation of good practice examples, empirical studies of CV in Germany are still rare. This paper presents the results of a survey on public awareness, and the extent and nature of CV among the 120 largest German companies and draws conclusions on how to enhance further development and dissemination of this kind of partnership between companies, their employees and the community in Germany. read more read less

Editorial - From paradox to practice: the rise of coopetition strategies

Coopetition strategies, defined as simultaneous competition and collaboration relationships between the same actors, represent a major paradoxical situation. Because of their paradoxical nature, coopetition strategies recently became an essential challenge for conceptualising a studied reality, but also for those who are experiencing the paradox as well. This special issue aims to contribute to the development of coopetition theory in shedding new light on the paradoxical nature of coopetition strategies. The questioning is mainly related to the definition of the concept, the appropriate level of analysis and the implementation of the coopetition process. The selection of articles focuses on the inner heterogeneity of coopetition, on the tensions arising while implementing coopetition process, and on the outcomes. They provide core operational and managerial insights. read more read less
