Supply chain management (SCM) is crucial for increasing organisational effectiveness, enhancing competitiveness, customer service and profitability. Actually, the lean and green philosophies have been adopted in the SCM context, but nearly always separately and with little understanding of their influence on supply chain performance. Accordingly, this paper intends to propose a conceptual model that explores the relationships between lean and green practices and supply chain performance. A set of lean and green SCM practices and a performance measurement system are suggested. The proposed performance measures intend to evaluate the practices influence on operational, economic and environmental supply chain's performance. read more read less

Sustainability is an important concept for twenty first century organizations and one approach for managing corporate sustainability is through the introduction of reverse logistics (RL). But there are many barriers to the implementation of RL in developing countries like India. This paper identifies sixteen barriers to RL from the literature survey. An interpretive structural modeling (ISM) technique has been used to develop a structural model to obtain proper hierarchy and interrelationship among the barriers. The model will help the decision makers in government and industry to prioritize the focus on the barriers for implementation of RL. read more read less

In the last decade, research in reverse logistics has rapidly grown in both academia and business driven by factors such as economics, environmental legislations and corporate citizenship. Particularly in academic research, a variety of quantitative models have been proposed to address reverse logistics network design, a key area of research in logistics. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the literature on reverse logistics network design during the period 2000?2008 and identify future research gaps and opportunities. read more read less

Metrics for performance measurement of a reverse/closed-loop supply chain

Many a firm today continually evaluates the performance of its supply chain in order to check whether the supply chain needs to be re-designed with respect to the customers' needs and requirements. Due to the inherent differences in a traditional supply chain and a reverse/closed-loop supply chain with respect to movement of goods as well as information, it is inappropriate to adopt the performance measures of a traditional supply chain for a reverse/closed-loop supply chain. To this end, this paper addresses the metrics that help evaluate the performance of a reverse/closed-loop supply chain. These metrics are incorporated in a mathematical model that uses quality function deployment (QFD) and linear physical programming (LPP) effectively to measure the 'satisfaction level' of the supply chain with respect to each of the metrics. The approach is illustrated through a numerical example. Brief introductions to the techniques used (QFD and LPP) and a brief review of the research in the field of strategic planning of a reverse/closed-loop supply chain are also given. read more read less

The purpose of this paper is to outline a new holistic approach for identifying and prioritising supply chain performance measures according to their importance in the evaluation of value-added activities in the entire supply chain. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique was used for Pairwise comparisons of main supply chain functions, processes and criteria. A questionnaire consisting of comparison tables of all functions was designed based on the AHP methodology and structured interviews were conducted with expert managers of four large Iranian companies. Total weights of each function and its processes in generating value towards the entire supply chain were calculated and their priorities were identified. Total weight of each criterion in evaluating the performance of supply chain was also calculated and a short list of the most important, practical and strategic performance measures is proposed to help managers and practitioners in analysing their supply chains. read more read less
