Data was collected from a sample of randomly selected 250 school administrators and teachers working in seventeen primary schools, public and private, in the Van province of East Anatolia, Turkey. Three conflict management strategies (competing, avoiding, and compromising) were examined in terms of task and school type. Results indicated that administrators are more likely to use avoiding and compromising strategies than teachers. Moreover, both administrators and teachers at private primary schools tend to use compromising, avoiding and competing behaviours than their colleagues at public schools. read more read less

A community of practice in a communications company was examined to discover how design specialists learned and shared knowledge to produce innovative designs. Contemporary learning and knowledge management theories were used as the basis for comparison. The design team revealed how they applied learning and knowledge management principles during their internal processes. Action research, reflection inaction and nominal focus group techniques were used. Several workflow models were produced by the participants to explain and contrast learning and knowledge management as applied in e-business. The findings indicated that the team did not apply conventional learning or knowledge management methodologies, but instead used a modified learning model. read more read less

Lighting over 200 villages through de-centralized power plants, impacting 200,000 people’s lives and counting - Acumen Fund.Although the rapid growth of the Indian economy in the last two decades has brought prosperity to a large segment of its population, thereby leading to higher living standards, there still remain some dark spots that cast doubts on this success story. There are still many remote parts of the country which are deprived of power supply owing to lack of regular supply of electricity through normal grid connections. This scenario changed with the launch of Husk Power Systems (HPS), which was initiated after a conversation between two friends, Gyanesh Pandey in Los Angeles, United States of America (USA), and Ratnesh Yadav in Patna, Bihar, India, and their strong desire to bring change to rural India. After several attempts over five years, to generate power through various biodiesel resources, they settled on rice husk as a source for generating electricity. Husk Power Systems was starte... read more read less

This paper reviews changes which occurred over the last decade in the retail sector in urban Pakistan, in terms of a decrease in traditional ‘kiryana’ stores, an increase in general stores, and the emergence of new formats such as superstores, malls, and retail chains. These trends are discussed in the context of broader socio–economic changes, including growth in the urban middle class and disposable incomes. The paper discusses similar trends that occurred in the late nineteenth century in North America and Europe, the recent rise in international retailing, and the possibility of global retailers such as Germany's Metro and the French Carrefour, entering the Pakistani market. The entry of such firms has often resulted in profoundly altering the retail landscape, as has been the experience in the less developed markets of East Europe, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific region. It is estimated that in 2002, about 6.8 million of the 50 million people living in urban Pakistan belonged to the upper and uppe... read more read less
