Plenitude, scarcity and the circulation of cultural memory
Ann Rigney1

An argument is made for the need to conceptualize cultural memory, not as merely derivative of individual psychology, but in terms of a ‘working memory’ (Assmann) that is constructed and reconstructed in public acts of remembrance and evolves according to distinctly cultural mechanisms. Foucault’s ‘scarcity principle’ is used to show the role of media in generating shared memories through processes of selection, convergence, recursivity and transfer. This media-based approach, emphasizing the way memories are communicated, circulated and exchanged, allows us to see how collective identities may be (re)defined through memorial practices, and not merely reflected in them. read more read less

A Rereading of Marx's The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon:

Karl Marx's The Eighteenth Brumaire ofLouis Napoleon, long recognized as a classic of historical writing, suffers the paradoxical fate of honour and neglect. It is honoured by the fame of its preamble, the notoriety of its parody, and the frequency with which it appears on the reading lists of college courses. But it is neglected as a work of art. We assume that we know Marx's \"worldview\" his historical determinism, his reduction of superstructure to substructure and we force the subtle and complex Brumaire into the ill-fitting bed of a static, crude, and dogmatic \"Marxism\". The theatrical metaphors and literary allusions which weave the rich texture of The Brumaire are applauded for their wit and polemical effect, but are separated from the philosophical and historical meaning of the text itself. Bythus detaching the texture from the text, by cleaving the metaphor from its meaning, The Brumaire as a unified work, a work of art, is violated. Consequently, one is frustrated in his attempt to understand The Brumaire: it appears elusive as an account of the destinies of the French bourgeoisie and of Louis Napoleon; and it seems opaque as an inquiry into the riddle of \"men making their own history but not just as they please\". If we are to gain access to the historical and philosophical insights of The Brumaire, we must begin by accepting the categories that the text emrloys and the fictions that it creates. t The central metaphor 0 The Brumaire, introduced in its opening lines, is the opposition between tragedy and farce. It is around this polarity, and through allusions to classicalmyth, that Marx organizes the often confusing historical events with which The Brumaire is concerned the revolutionary events in France from the barricades of February 1848 to the coup of December 1851. He represents those events as two parallel, or anti-parallel, movements: the political death of the French bourgeoisie, and the accession to imperial power of Louis Napoleon. And these historical movements, in tum, provide the context within which Marx begins to unravel the central philosophical riddle of The Brumaire: that men make their own history and everywhere they are in chains to their past: read more read less

La Princesse de Clèves and the Querelle des anciens et des modernes

There is in fact virtual continuity between the two Qierelles, and the Querelle des anciens et des modernes is much more important for the underlying clash of moral visions than for the opposition of aesthetic principles. Although personal friendships and animosities counted for more than is often supposed in the attitudes adopted, thereby blurring the fundamental principles at stake in the dispute, the defenders of the modernes were in fact carrying to final victory the heritage of the northern renaissance euphorically continued in the epoch of novels of galanterie and heroism, tested and no doubt corrected in the light of the moral and aesthetic severities, first of the school of Malherbe and Chapelain, and then of the protagonists of the anciens, but ending in a confidence in instinct which swept all before it in the eighteenth century. The enduring fascination of La Princesse de Clèves derives at least partly from its refusal to take sides in the Querelle and consequently from the uncertainty of its moral vision. It inconclusively explores such fundamental issues as the virtue of sincerity, the possibility of happiness in marriage, the proper recourse of a married woman who finds herself in love with read more read less

The ideology of Slow Food

This article addresses the ideology of Slow Food (SF), an influential movement founded in Italy in 1986. Through an analysis of a wide range of texts, ranging from SF’s opposition to fast food to its ambition to establish a new ‘gastronomic science’ and a new ‘development model’ based on the three criteria of buono (good), pulito (clean) and giusto (tasty), the article concludes that SF is a descendant of the countercultural and anti-consumerist movements of the 1960s and 70s. It also claims that SF’s understanding of the capitalist system is limited, that its idea of a new agriculture and a new economy is simply that of returning to a primitive, pre-industrial economy (without explaining how that economy could feed the present world population), that its ideal of a new world is that of a stratified and immutable society, and that its main goal is to combine the commercial promotion of high-price luxury food products with political engagement. read more read less
