The need for flame‐retardant finishing of textiles is examined in the context of the hazards of textile flammability, associated legislation and procedures for assessing textile burning behaviour. The functions of flame‐retardant finishes and durable finishes developed specifically for cellulose, wool and man‐made fibres are described in depth. Multipurpose finishes for both cellulose and wool textiles in which flame retardancy is only one property conferred on the textile are examined. Fibre blends present a particular problem and special attention is paid to discussing those finishes applied to polyester/cotton blended fabrics. The laundering behaviour and consequent finish durability are reviewed. In addition, the effects that applying flame‐retardant finishes have on textile properties and performance are considered. Recent developments in methods used to apply flame‐retardant finishes are outlined. read more read less

Liquid-phase adsorption has been shown to be highly efficient for the removal of dyes and other organic matters from process or waste effluent. Many different types of adsorbent are used to remove colour from wastewater among which the most widely used material is activated carbon. Since activated carbon is expensive and necessitates regeneration, attempts have been made to substitute alternatives that are biodegradable, low cost and/or waste materials. This article presents the investigations carried out by numerous researchers on the use of different kinds of adsorbents and their adsorption capacities for the removal of specific dyes from textile wastewater. read more read less

The rapid growth in technical textiles and in their end-uses has generated many opportunities for the application of innovative chemical finishes. Novel finishes of high added value for apparel fabrics are also greatly appreciated by a more discerning and demanding consumer market. This review will concentrate on some of the new approaches to producing high added value textiles that provide consumers with greater levels of comfort, safety, aesthetics and functional performance. Some of the technologies to be described are developed to the commercial exploitation stage, while others are still in development but offer potential for the future. Textile finishing personnel and companies must be active in keeping abreast of the developments in chemical finishing that are emerging globally, in order to survive and prosper in this very competitive and cost-conscious sector of the textile industry. The future of textile finishing within Europe depends upon rapid adoption of high performance, high added value finishes that provide innovation and novelty to the consumer, and in seeking out new end-uses and markets for such finishes. read more read less
