Abstract: This paper presents 28 GHz wideband propagation channel characteristics for millimeter wave (mmWave) urban cellular communication systems. The mmWave spectrum is considered as a key-enabling feature of 5G cellular communication systems to provide an enormous capacity increment; however, mmWave channel models are lacking today. The paper compares measurements conducted with a spherical scanning 28 GHz channel sounder system in the urban street-canyon environments of Daejeon, Korea and NYU campus, Manhattan, with ray-tracing simulations made for the same areas. Since such scanning measurements are very costly and time-intensive, only a relatively small number of channel samples can be obtained. The measurements are thus used to quantify the accuracy of a ray-tracer; the ray-tracer is subsequently used to obtain a large number of channel samples to fill gaps in the measurements. A set of mmWave radio propagation parameters is presented based on both the measurement results and ray-tracing, and the corresponding channel models following the 3GPP spatial channel model (SCM) methodology are also described.

Abstract: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from ramie fibers are studied as stabilizers of oil-in-water emulsions. The phase behavior of heptane and water systems is studied, and emulsions stabilized by CNCs are analyzed by using drop sizing (light scattering) and optical, scanning, and freeze-fracture electron microscopies. Water-continuous Pickering emulsions are produced with cellulose nanocrystals (0.05–0.5 wt%) grafted with thermo-responsive poly(NIPAM) brushes (poly(NIPAM)-g-CNCs). They are observed to be stable during the time of observation of 4 months. In contrast, unmodified CNCs are unable to stabilize heptane-in-water emulsions. After emulsification, poly(NIPAM)-g-CNCs are observed to form aligned, layered structures at the oil–water interface. The emulsions stabilized by poly(NIPAM)-g-CNCs break after heating at a temperature above the LCST of poly(NIPAM), which is taken as indication of the temperature responsiveness of the brushes installed on the particles and thus the responsiveness of the Pickering emulsions. This phenomenon is further elucidated via rheological measurements, in which viscosities of the Pickering emulsions increase on approach of the low critical solution temperature of poly(NIPAM). The effect of temperature can be counterbalanced with the addition of salt which is explained by the reduction of electrostatic and steric interactions of poly(NIPAM)-g-CNCs at the oil–water interface.

Abstract: The explosive rise of Internet of Things (IoT) systems have notably increased the potential attack surfaces for cybercriminals. Accounting for the features and constraints of IoT devices, traditional security countermeasures can be inefficient in dynamic IoT environments. In this vein, the advantages introduced by software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) have the potential to reshape the landscape of cybersecurity for IoT systems. To this aim, we provide a comprehensive analysis of security features introduced by NFV and SDN, describing the manifold strategies able to monitor, protect, and react to IoT security threats. We also present lessons learned in the adoption of SDN/NFV-based protection approaches in IoT environments, comparing them with conventional security countermeasures. Finally, we deeply discuss the open challenges related to emerging SDN- and NFV-based security mechanisms, aiming to provide promising directives to conduct future research in this fervent area.
