Abstract: This paper describes the reconstruction of electrons and photons with the ATLAS detector, employed for measurements and searches exploiting the complete LHC Run 2 dataset. An improved energy clustering algorithm is introduced, and its implications for the measurement and identification of prompt electrons and photons are discussed in detail. Corrections and calibrations that affect performance, including energy calibration, identification and isolation efficiencies, and the measurement of the charge of reconstructed electron candidates are determined using up to 81 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected at √s=13 TeV between 2015 and 2017.

Abstract: Mcl-1 is one Bcl-2 family member that plays a pivotal role in animal development. The extremely labile nature of the Mcl-1 protein itself and the fact that the Mcl-1 level is a critical determinant in various cell survival pathways suggest that cellular processes that regulate Mcl-1 stability are as important as those that regulate Mcl-1 synthesis. Although transcriptional stimulation of Mcl-1 synthesis in response to various stimuli has been well documented, regulation of Mcl-1 stability has been hardly explored. In this study, we identified that the translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) was one cellular factor that interacted with Mcl-1 and modulated Mcl-1 stability. While overexpression of TCTP augmented the protein stability of Mcl-1, knockdown expression of TCTP by RNA interference destabilized Mcl-1. Furthermore, TCTP stabilized Mcl-1 through interfering with Mcl-1's degradation by the ubiquitin-dependent proteasome degradation pathway, and the TCTP binding-defective mutant of Mcl-1 (K257V) was much more susceptible to degradation and manifested a compromised antiapoptotic activity. Taken together, these results suggest that TCTP modulates Mcl-1's antiapoptotic activity by modulating its protein stability. The possible mechanism(s) involved in TCTP's modulation process is discussed.

Abstract: Dichroic polarizers and waveplates exploiting anisotropic materials have vast applications in displays and numerous optical components, such as filters, beamsplitters and isolators. Artificial anisotropic media were recently suggested for the realization of negative refraction, cloaking, hyperlenses, and controlling luminescence. However, extending these applications into the terahertz domain is hampered by a lack of natural anisotropic media, while artificial metamaterials offer a strong engineered anisotropic response. Here we demonstrate a terahertz metamaterial with anisotropy tunable from positive to negative values. It is based on the Maltese-cross pattern, where anisotropy is induced by breaking the four-fold symmetry of the cross by displacing one of its beams. The symmetry breaking permits the excitation of a Fano mode active for one of the polarization eigenstates controlled by actuators using microelectromechanical systems. The metamaterial offers new opportunities for the development of terahertz variable waveplates, tunable filters and polarimetry.

Abstract: A novel image protection scheme called "cocktail watermarking" is proposed in this paper. We analyze and point out the inadequacy of the modulation techniques commonly used in ordinary spread spectrum watermarking methods and the visual model-based ones. To resolve the inadequacy, two watermarks which play complementary roles are simultaneously embedded into a host image. We also conduct a statistical analysis to derive the lower bound of the worst likelihood that the better watermark (out of the two) can be extracted. With this "high" lower bound, it is ensured that a "better" extracted watermark is always obtained. From extensive experiments, results indicate that our cocktail watermarking scheme is remarkably effective in resisting various attacks, including combined ones.
