TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an in-depth understanding of KED in cell-based ICP-MS for analysts to make better use of it. But the intrinsic limitations of this technique are shown to lie in the statistical nature of collision processes, which causes the broadening of ion kinetic energy distribution that hinders efficient KED.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cleaning method for a quartz substrate includes mixing a rinsing solution and mixing a cleaning solution such that the solutions are electrically conductive, which is less susceptible to surface damage caused by electrostatic discharge.
Abstract: A cleaning method for a quartz substrate includes mixing a rinsing solution and mixing a cleaning solution such that the solutions are electrically conductive. The rinsing solution is carbonated and is used in more than one step within the method. The cleaning solution includes ammonium hydroxide. As a result of the electrical conductivity of the solutions, the cleaning method is less susceptible to surface damage caused by electrostatic discharge. The sequence of steps includes rinsing the quartz substrate with the carbonated rinsing solution, removing loose contaminants by a high pressure application of the cleaning solution, and removing organic contaminants in a strong oxidation environment using a solution of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The carbonated rinsing solution is again applied, followed by another high pressure application of the cleaning solution and a final rinse with the carbonated rinsing solution. In the preferred embodiment, the cleaned quartz substrate is used to form a laser ablation mask by depositing dielectric layers that are patterned to define an exposure pattern. In the most preferred embodiment, the laser ablation mask is used in the fabrication of inkjet printheads.

TL;DR: In this article, an automated system for purification of a substance of interest is described, which generally comprises an instrument for moving fluids through the system, a reagent pack for storing fluids, and a purification cartridge.
Abstract: The present invention provides an automated system for purification of a substance of interest. The system generally comprises an instrument for moving fluids through the system, a reagent pack for storing fluids, and a purification cartridge. The cartridge comprises two filtration units for binding substances based on different physical properties. The cartridge also comprises rotary valves for control of movement of fluids on the cartridge. In preferred embodiments, the system is useful for purifying RNA from blood samples.

TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus for separating a liquid in a liquid metal micro-switch is described, which consists of a heater and a sub-channel inside a structure, where the heater is located inside a cavity of the structure onto which the liquid metal switch is fabricated.
Abstract: An apparatus for separating a liquid in a liquid metal micro-switch. In representative embodiments, the apparatus comprises a heater and a sub-channel inside a structure. The heater is located inside a cavity of the structure onto which the liquid metal micro-switch is fabricated. The sub-channel inside the structure connects the cavity to a main channel. The sub-channel has a cross-sectional area. The value of the cross-sectional area at the boundary between the sub-channel and the main channel is less than the value of the cross-sectional area at the boundary between the sub-channel and the cavity. The gas permeates the cavity and the sub-channel and is capable of extending into the main channel.
