TL;DR: The most reliable and practical procedure developed to date for the detection of hollow heart in whole tubers uses x-ray technology.
Abstract: A review of the literature was conducted on the causes, development, control and detection of hollow heart in potatoes Hollow heart is a physiological disorder characterized by a cavity in the pith region of the tuber Development of the disorder is often associated with rapid tuber growth that may be preceded by a period of moisture or nutritional stress Two or more types of hollow heart may exist They are differentiated by the cause of the disorder, the pattern of development, and the growth stage of the tuber when the disorder develops Management can affect the incidence of hollow heart by such methods as choice of cultivar, plant spacing, rate and timing of fertilizer application, and control of soil moisture Several attempts have been made to develop non-destructive techniques for detection of tubers with hollow heart cavities The most reliable and practical procedure developed to date for the detection of hollow heart in whole tubers uses x-ray technology

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is reported here that BIV can permanently infect diploid and aneuploid cells from four different species: bovine, canine, ferret and ovine and results are compared to those of lentiviruses.

TL;DR: Correlation and regression analyses of data from experimental plots did not indicate any significant relationships between population levels of root-lesion nematodes in roots or soil and severity of root or foliar diseases in barley or wheat.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The ability of liposome-treated fresh and frozen spermatozoa from two bulls to interact with zona-free hamster oocytes was examined to show whether the in vitro test results would correspond with in vivo fertility as indicated by the 60 to 90 d nonreturn to service rates.

TL;DR: There is no good conventional fungicidal control for Fusarium crown and root rot of tomatoes caused by FUSarium oxysporum f.
Abstract: There is no good conventional fungicidal control for Fusarium crown and root rot (FCRR) of tomatoes caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici Jarvis and Shoemaker (FORL), but Jarvis (1977) suggested that the disease would be amenable to control by biological means, perhaps in a similar way to the use of suppressive soils to control wilt-inducing formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum, (Louvet et al 1981; Cook 1982), or by the augmentation of soils with substrates conducive to suppressiveness.

TL;DR: Fusarium crown and root rot (FCRR) of tomato caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.
Abstract: Fusarium crown and root rot (FCRR) of tomato caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici Jarvis & Shoemaker (FORL) is essentially a disease of fumigated or steam-sterilized soils (Jarvis 1977; Jarvis et al 1983; Rowe and Farley 1981; Sonoda 1976, 1979; Sonoda et al 1978). Before the disease was better understood, growers were advised to sterilize soil thoroughly and to carry out a complete hygiene programme by washing greenhouse superstructures, pots and equipment with formalin, but Jarvis (1977) noted that growers who did all this often had the worse affected crops. This proved to be a common experience (Rowe and Farley 1981), and suggested that FORL had a particularly efficient dispersal mechanism.
