TL;DR: Data support the use of slow-release persulfate and zerovalent iron to treat dioxane-contaminated water and indicate that excess ferrous iron produced from the Fe0-persulfate reaction scavenges sulfate radicals and prevents further dioxan degradation.

TL;DR: It is suggested that WMC may benefit performance on fundamental processes common to both incremental and insight problem solving, but hinder performance on the processes that are unique to insight (e.g., solution and restructuring).
Abstract: Higher working memory capacity (WMC) improves performance on a range of cognitive and academic tasks. However, a greater ability to control attention sometimes leads individuals with higher WMC to persist in using complex, attention-demanding approaches that are suboptimal for a given task. We examined whether higher WMC would hinder insight problem solving, which is thought to rely on associative processes that operate largely outside of close attentional control. In addition, we examined whether characteristics of the insight problems influence whether this negative relationship will be revealed. In Experiment 1, participants completed matchstick arithmetic problems, which require a similar initial problem representation for all problems. Higher WMC was associated with less accurate insight problem solving. In Experiment 2, participants completed insight word problems, which require substantially different representations for each problem. Higher WMC was again negatively associated with insight, but only after statistically controlling for shared variance between insight and incremental problem-solving accuracy. These findings suggest that WMC may benefit performance on fundamental processes common to both incremental and insight problem solving (e.g., initial problem representation), but hinder performance on the processes that are unique to insight (e.g., solution and restructuring). By considering the WMC of the individual, and the nature of the insight task, we may better understand the process of insight and how to best support it. (PsycINFO Database Record

TL;DR: Fish are expected to have substantial impacts on demography of C. volutator due to the length of the fish foraging season and because fish appear to contribute to extreme female-biased sex ratios typically seen in this species.
Abstract: We studied feeding site selection and impacts by benthic fish (flounder and skates) on the amphipod Corophium volutator, an ecologically-important species in muddy intertidal communities. We determined that benthic fish foraged mainly in areas that had high densities of amphipods, on a mudflat in Nova Scotia, Canada. This observation was based on recording sediments displaced by benthic fish in areas where samples of amphipods also were taken. From gut-content analysis, we found that benthic fish fed almost entirely on C. volutator, and most consumed smaller amphipods than expected based on samples of amphipods collected from the substrate. Benthic fish also fed on male amphipods more than expected. We determined that daily foraging pressure by benthic fish on amphipods was low (about 0.3% per day) by measuring the new appearance of feeding traces made by fish. Nonetheless, fish are expected to have substantial impacts on demography of C. volutator due to the length of the fish foraging season an...

TL;DR: According to the triangle model of responsibility as mentioned in this paper, responsibility is a psychological adhesive that links an actor to a set of prescriptions for behavior and to relevant events, and it is associated with the tendency to make internal attributions for social ills such as unemployment.
Abstract: According to the triangle model of responsibility, responsibility is a psychological adhesive that links an actor to a set of prescriptions for behavior and to relevant events. To test predictions from the model about the antecedents and consequences of responsibility, and also to test hypotheses about how the Protestant work ethic (PWE) is related to judgments of responsibility, participants made attributions about characters in achievement situations. PWE scores were associated with attributions of stronger links, greater personal responsibility, greater expected success, and more negative reactions to a possible failure. Further, PWE predicted responsibility even after statistically controlling for judgments of obligation, control, and clarity. The findings help to clarify why the PWE is associated with the tendency to make internal attributions for social ills such as unemployment.

TL;DR: In this article, the innovations algorithm was used to obtain parameter estimates for periodically stationary time series models, and the asymptotic distribution for these estimates in the case of the innovations having a finite fourth moment was derived.
Abstract: . The innovations algorithm can be used to obtain parameter estimates for periodically stationary time series models. In this paper, we compute the asymptotic distribution for these estimates in the case, where the innovations have a finite fourth moment. These asymptotic results are useful to determine which model parameters are significant. In the process, we also develop asymptotics for the Yule–Walker estimates.
