Abstract: The Laurentian Great Lakes, including Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, located in the eastern part of North America are considered the largest of freshwater lakes in the world; however, very little is known about the diversity and distribution of indigenous microbial assemblages within these vast bodies of freshwater systems. Therefore, to delineate the microbial structure and community composition in these aquatic environments, combinations of high-throughput sequencing and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) approaches were utilized to quantitatively characterize the occurrence, diversity, and distribution of bacterioplankton assemblages in six different sites located along the coastal regions of Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie. Phylogenetic examination showed a diverse bacterial community belonging to 11 different taxonomic groups. Pyrosequencing results revealed that the majority of the sequences were clustered into four main groups, i.e., Proteobacteria, Bacteriodetes, Actinobacteria, and Cyanobacteria, while fluorescent in situ hybridization also showed the numerical dominance of members of the Gammaproteobacteria and the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium in the six lake sites examined. Overall, the assemblages were shown to be quite diverse in distribution among the lake sites examined, comprising mostly of various heterotrophic populations, with the exception of the Lake Erie-Sandusky Bay site with more than 50% domination by autotrophic Cyanobacteria. This indicates that combinations of factors including water chemistry and various anthropogenic disturbances as well as the lake morphometric characteristics are probably influencing the community structure and diversity of the bacterial assemblages within the systems.

Abstract: The development of models of human sentence processing has traditionally followed one of two paths. Either the model posited a sequence of processing modules, each with its own task-specific knowledge (e.g., syntax and semantics), or it posited a single processor utilizing different types of knowledge inextricably integrated into a monolithic knowledge base. Our previous work in modeling the sentence processor resulted in a model in which different processing modules used separate knowledge sources but operated in parallel to arrive at the interpretation of a sentence. One highlight of this model is that it offered an explanation of how the sentence processor might recover from an error in choosing the meaning of an ambiguous word. Recent experimental work by Laurie Stowe strongly suggests that the human sentence processor deals with syntactic error recovery using a mechanism very much like that proposed by our model of semantic error recovery. Another way to interpret Stowe's finding is this: the human sentence processor consists of a single unified processing module utilizing multiple independent knowledge sources in parallel. A sentence processor built upon this architecture should at times exhibit behavior associated with modular approaches, and at other times act like an integrated system. In this paper we explore some of these ideas via a prototype computational model of sentence processing called COMPERE, and propose a set of psychological experiments for testing our theories.

Abstract: In the course of a taxonomic revision of several clades of Greater Antillean Melastomataceae, we discovered a previously undescribed species, Miconia abscondita, from the Massif de la Hotte, Haiti. Miconia abscondita is based on a vegetative collection by Swedish botanist, E. L. Ekman, which was made in 1926. This new species is a member of the Mecranium clade, a group well supported on the basis of both morphological and molecular data, but which is highly embedded within the phylogenetic structure of the genus Miconia. Miconia abscondita is clearly placed within the Mecranium clade on the basis of DNA sequence data, and this placement also is supported by the form of its hairs and, especially, the pattern of stem indumentum; however, it matches no currently described species. Miconia abscondita is thus described, illustrated, and compared with putatively related and/or phenetically similar species. Abstract: Observations of the W49A North star-forming region in the J = 2-1 line of CS have been made with the BIMA array with an angular resolution of 46 × 38; complementary observations in the J = 2-1 line of C18O and J = 3-2 line of C34S were made with the IRAM 30 m telescope, with angular resolutions of 12'' and 17'' respectively. The molecular complex is elongated along a diagonal from northeast to southwest. The position-velocity diagrams for CS convolved to 12'' resemble those of C18O and the J = 5-4 line of C34S (from Serabyn et al.). There is a change in velocity along the major axis of the molecular complex. Most spectra toward W49A North show two main velocity components, the relative intensities of which vary with position along the major axis of the molecular complex. At the higher resolution of ~4'', absorption of the continuum emission at 3 mm by CS is clearly observed. The apparent velocity gradient is seen to be part of a C-shaped distribution in the CS position-velocity image. Furthermore, as is found in the J = 1-0 HCO+ data by Welch et al., the optically thick CS J = 2-1 line exhibits an inverse P Cygni profile toward H II region G. These two characteristics of the CS data lend support to the global collapse model (Welch et al.). The high-resolution CS profiles in the central region all show varying degrees of absorption. At lower resolution the surrounding CS emission fills in much of the absorption and the inverse P Cygni shape disappears.
